    w/ The Sons of Rainier

We shed old skin in order to evolve and move forward. We let go of who we were in the past and embrace who we’re meant to be now. The Deslondes have taken such steps as not only bandmates, but as brothers. The New Orleans quintet—Dan Cutler, Sam Doores, Riley Downing, Cameron Snyder, and John James Tourville—have weathered ups, downs, and everything in between only to strengthen the bond between them.

Infusing everything from saxophone, flute, and synth to string arrangements and a full drum kit for the first time, the group naturally progress and evolve in real-time on their third full-length offering, Ways & Means [New West Records].

“The title reminds me of being young, getting into the music business, going through everything, and coming out of it,” Riley observes. “We’re taking a look right, left, and back at ourselves.”

“We were letting go of a bunch of old dynamics that left us burnt out,” adds John James. “However, we’re focused on being productive and on the other side.”

The “other side” might just be their brightest yet. The Deslondes revealed their self-titled debut to widespread tastemaker applause during 2015. However, they really hit their stride on Hurry Home in 2017. Right out of the gate, Noisey proclaimed, “The Deslondes have found a comfortable sound to create art in, and it serves them well,” while Rolling Stone noted, “The Deslondes’ take on country relies on a gritty, grimy mix of early rock ‘n’ roll and lo-fi R&B.” In addition to praise from American Songwriter, Paste, The Boot, and more, the record closed out the year on Uncut’s “Favorite Albums of 2017.”

“I grew up in a real tight-knit family in the country,” Riley goes in. “We all pitched in to take care of my grandmother at the end of her life. We’re our own heroes to our families and friends. I needed to write the song to remind myself you can be your own hero. If it helps me, maybe it will help someone else.”

In the end, The Deslondes draw on their own familial union to forge a similar connection with listeners.

“To us, this is family,” John James leaves off. “It’s a part of our lives. When you hear our music, I hope you feel like you’re hanging out with us. The band’s back together now, and it just feels good.”

“Riley, JJ, Dan, and Cam are my brothers,” Sam concurs. “We’ve all been through so much together. I don’t think any of us will have that experience with another group of people again in our lives. Sometimes, we drive each other crazy of course, but we’re family. I’d take a bullet for any of those geezers.”

    w/ Benjamin Dakota Rogers

    Jeremie Albino

Jeremie Albino’s grainy ballads are inflected with a joyous tenor that has found him a distinct space in the world of Americana, folk, blues, and country. Reimagining the image of the lonesome wanderer, his music is rooted in the instant when everyone in a room experiences the same moment in a multitude of different ways—embodying solitude and connection all at once. Starting out playing late night gig slots, Jeremie’s rigour has landed him a blossoming touring career. Garnering attention from the community and press alike, he’s heralded as “a true resurgence of the most authentic blues brought to life through the eyes of a modern and young, but old-soul artist ” (American Songwriter) and “the next in line of emotive band leaders that project soul and directness atop a head turning sound” (Glide Magazine). His latest album, Tears You Hide (2023), produced by Jeremie’s long time collaborator and manager Crispin Day, is a memento to family, resilience, and the road ahead. Three years in the making, the rickety foot stomping, and lilting stories inherent to Albino’s sound remains, yet the narrative has shifted slightly. Tears You Hide troubles the romanticization of the past by cherishing the present, stringing a narrative where connection, resolve, and vulnerability are distilled in an unfiltered amount of gratitude.

    Benjamin Dakota Rogers

Benjamin Dakota Rogers wields one of those distinct, immediate, and truly wild voices. With a studied nod to old-time and bluegrass rhythms, his unvarnished sound effectively smashes the barrier between past and present.

Delivering songs from a deep well of passion for storytelling, Rogers’ lyric sensibility is rare among young artists. His most recent single, John Came Home, is a haunting take on the murder ballad. “I’d had the riff for about six months,” he says. “I tend to write short stories and convert them into songs.” John Came Home is full of upbeat boldness and ghostly ire that culminates in a direct hit to the chest.

Rogers finds a way to match his instrument to the guttural twang of the voice. “I inherited my great-grandfather’s violin when I was young,” he says. “So I grew up playing that.” After a few years on six-string, Rogers began tuning his tenor guitar like a fiddle. “Tenors are neat because they were only popular for a short time in the 1920s. I’ve played about two-hundred shows on mine. It’s beautiful, and unreliable,” he laughs. The unconventional nature of such a classic piece shines on Charlie Boy, where precise picking builds to a dramatic peak. With sturdy backing by a sparse rhythm section,Rogers offers a fresh and authentic contribution to the traditions of string-band sound.

With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation, Corey Harris has earned critical acclaim as one of the few modern-day bluesmen able to channel the raw, direct emotion of acoustic Delta blues without coming off as an authenticity-obsessed historian. Along with Keb’ Mo’ and Alvin Youngblood Hart, Harris raised the flag of acoustic guitar blues in the mid-1990s. Although well versed in the early history of blues guitar, he is no well-mannered preservationist, mixing a considerable variety of influences—from New Orleans, the Caribbean, and Africa—into his richly expressive music.

One of the brightest young talents to emerge in Cajun, Creole, and zydeco music in the past decade, four-time Grammy nominee Cedric Watson is fiddler, singer, accordionist, and songwriter with unlimited potential. The San Felipe, Texas, native made his first appearance at the zydeco jam at the Big Easy in Houston at just 19 years old. Just two years later, he moved to south Louisiana and immersed himself in French music. Over the next several years, Watson performed French music in 17 countries and on seven albums with various groups, including his own, Bijou Creole. Watson’s albums are a tapestry of pulsing rhythms and Creole poetry, and his unforgettable live performances are at once progressive and nostalgic.

Evan Dando is currently at work in São Paulo, Brazil on the first album of original songs from The Lemonheads since 2006. After playing anniversary tours for It’s A Shame About Ray and Come On Feel The Lemonheads, Evan is embarking on a US solo tour in Spring 2024 to play shows with an eclectic mix of Lemonheads classics, new material, and covers.

A new single from The Lemonheads, “Fear Of Living”, which was co-written by the late Dan Lardner (of QTY) and Evan, was just released digitally on November 14th, 2023 via Fire Records, and will be available for sale on 7” vinyl at the upcoming February and March shows.

“For most writers, it’s extraordinarily difficult to catch and hold feelings of pathos, idleness, hunger, a kind of hazy but manageable melancholy. Dando’s songs are short (many are under or around two minutes), with choruses and hooks so easygoing, so suffused with nonchalance, that it feels as though they must have arrived fully formed and without struggle.” - The New Yorker

    Liily

Liily are four Los Angeles musicians- Dylan Nash, Sam De La Torre, Charlie Anastasis & Maxx Morando - who, up until now, were mostly known for their manic and cacophonous live shows. Summed up as an “Angeleno quintet…pushing the rock genre forward and into a new era of raw tension and passionate fire…” (Atwood Magazine) the band quickly gained early momentum. Those performances, alongside a couple of early singles packaged together into an 2019 EP entitled I Can Fool Anybody In This Town, drove the young band to some surprising early successes: performing at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, touring across Europe and the United States, listed as a VEVO Artist to Watch, and then finding themselves on the cover of major rock playlists. Almost two years later, the band returns with new music and a new energy. Lead singer, Dylan Nash talks about the ‘new era’ as “I think thematically it’s very different, I think the intensity of it is very different. I think we had the same intention though which is to try to maintain a sense of forward momentum - that’s what it still has in common.”
Liily looks to harness their valley upbringing and jump from moment to moment and genre to genre, creating an experimental and original set of songs, all more strange and abrasive but also far more three dimensional than anything the band has done before. It still contains the unbridled energy of those early shows and singles but feels stripped of anything passive or unintentional.

    Bad Nerves

The bastard child of a Ramones/Strokes one night stand, Bad Nerves play ferociously fast distorted pop songs and drew acclaim with their previous releases ‘Dreaming’, ‘Baby Drummer’, & ‘Can’t Be Mine’. It would appear to be in the DNA of rock music, particularly punk music, that the music itself happens by some kind of happy accident. Nothing truer could be said of the Essex five piece speed punk band. For frontman Bobby, the formation of the band itself was an unintentional happenstance that just wound up taking off in unexpected but very exciting directions. Did band life choose Bad Nerves or did Bad Nerves choose band life? It's hard to say.

On the eve of releasing their second album, the brilliantly titled Still Nervous, the boys are still reeling from their surprise success. Their self-made, self-funded debut put them in the hearts and minds of the cream of the alternative crop in 2020; from tastemakers such as Dan P Carter to Alyx Holcombe, and from peers like Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong to Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, Bad Nerves were instantaneously heralded with the poisoned chalice of saviours of a type of punk that promises to never die. They’ve toured with Royal Blood and The Darkness, and have drawn comparisons to Supergrass, the Ramones and Jay Reatard. And despite all that, their pop rock is a unique – and very fast – whack over the head that reminds us all of the future life left in hell-raising loud and fast music.

    Kevin Devine

In the very first line of her 1959 novel The Haunting Of Hill House, the late author Shirley Jackson writes, “No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality.” That conviction is shared by musician Kevin Devine on his upcoming 10th LP Nothing’s Real, So Nothing’s Wrong, a beautiful, surreal, cinematic bedroom-rock fever dream. Its title, hewn from the chant-sung chorus of lead single “Albatross,” nods to this. In the face of incomprehensibly desperate struggles, a new spiritual paradigm is a necessity: “If you’re sinking, sing along/Nothing’s real, so nothing’s wrong,” sings Devine.

Like Jackson’s observation, it’s not an encouragement of retreat; it’s an inward solution in the name of preservation, a personal reorientation toward struggle in a collapsing landscape riddled with failed systems and vacant coping mechanisms that breed malignant internalizations.

“Part of what’s so scary about all of this stuff happening outside of us is so much of it feels so surreal and cynical,” says Devine. “We’ve invested in a version of reality that is almost so perverse that it can’t be real. Trying to find a solution to that almost involved seeing the thing as it is and invalidating it to yourself: it’s not that I’m poor, it’s that capitalism is fucking broken and rapacious. It’s not that I’m not a real man, it’s that masculinity is broken. It’s not that I’m not strong because I’m not violent, it’s that militarism has infected everything we look at.”

This is the central thesis linking the record’s 11 tracks, which drift between orchestral acoustic indie, lo-fi psych-folk, and melodic guitar pop. “They’re all excavating a particular brand of how to operate in a crisis, spiritual and familial and cultural,” explains Devine. “Rather than a spiritual bypass that tells me I’m being taken care of by some invisible architect, it’s like, ‘Everything is exactly as it is and a lot of what I invest in actually isn’t real and doesn’t need to be invested in.’ Nothing’s Real, So Nothing’s Wrong might be a little pithy, but how do I get through today? Sometimes that’s the best answer.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

After over a decade of touring, Roselit Bone have perfected an infectious and intense live show that has transfixed crowds in a nightly conversion ritual. Previously described by Oregon Public Broadcasting as “a unique type of gothic country rock that borrows heavily from Mexican ranchera music, rockabilly and the same lonely and wide-open spaces that inspired the classic Spaghetti Western scores of composer Ennio Morricone,” the Portland 8-piece – led by frontwoman Charlotte McCaslin – have deepened, shapeshifted, and outdone themselves on their fourth full-length record, Ofrenda.

Album opener “Your Gun” begins quietly with guitarist Victor Franco’s tense, muted power chords as Charlotte seethes “I can’t stop crying long enough to fuck // and there’s a bullet missing from your gun.” The drums fire, and violent stomps and claps herald the arrival of the full band. Trumpets blare, violins swell, guitars thunder, and tambourine rattles convulsively. Saxophone oozes and bleats as the band stalks the ruins of civic and carnal relationships, and you know Roselit Bone is back.

While at times confrontational, showcasing the band’s unambiguous worship of early punk bands like Suicide and The Gun Club, there is a new level of subtlety and complexity on Ofrenda. Serpentine, distorted organs and Charlotte’s smooth, psychedelic guitar leads crawl through “The Sea In Silhouette,” a sultry, feminine anthem of collapse awareness. Cops kick over prayer candles on the short, beautiful “Veladoras”, itself a prayer for peace that bursts into a fiery dirge with harpsichord, church bells and swirling synths as the band briefly charge in and out of the song like an apocalyptic cavalry. On “Vassal or Vagabond,” Charlotte’s arpeggiated requinto guitar channels the haunting ranchera of Chavela Vargas under the strains of Faith Grossnicklaus’ heartbreaking, elegiac violin. The sinister baritone of King Dude harmonizes with Charlotte on the song’s mantra “Be you a vassal or vagabond, you’re not to speak until fired upon // We’ve seen the work of your lesser gods and we are done pretending.”

    AC Sapphire

Portland artist AC Sapphire returns with the decadent new album Dec. 32nd, songs from a cycle that honors Sapphire at her best: guitar, and vocals front and center; celebrations of the songwriter, the shredder, that she is. Sapphire sits serenely among the songwriting class that is our generation's Laurel Canyon sound. AC's music has a grasp on the cosmic side of Americana. She resides in Portland, but was once a desert denizen, and her southwestern exposure shows in the wide open, dusty, romantic sound of each song. She's the winner of Relix Sonic Showdown, a finalist in the John Lennon songwriting contest. She's shared the stage with artists like Son Little, long time friend Sunny War, and even been featured on a Shirley Manson (Garbage) song. AC has played Philadelphia Folk Festival, Treefort Music Fest. Even as this album is being released, she's finishing recording another with New Song Music as the winner of their 2022 contest.

Sapphire makes a meta-modern version of Americana. Honoring the cross of hippies and cowboys that began the genre, embroidering thoughtful songwriting with cosmic consideration, emotional rock n roll, and western vista inspired folk rock. She’s capable of eviscerating emotions with harmonies and heated hard hitting love songs. Sapphire mines the same golden, glowing vein of Courtney Marie Andrews, Kassi Valazza, Madison Cunningham, or Mikaela Davis. She's a multi-instrumentalist and composer whose songs take the earnest torch of cosmic country and carry it forward, blazing a trail through a jaded, junk-future. Sapphire sings whole-heartedly, and makes cover-to-cover albums fit for Long Play listening, sitting and smoking, soul searching, desert dazing.

    Weezy Ford

Weezy Ford is a musician and songwriter living in the Columbia River Gorge. Her first musical endeavors incorporated slide guitar, vintage feels, garage-rock fuzz, and tap dancing on her EP Bobbypin Graveyard. She got tired of carrying around a box to dance on, and began writing songs on a tiny synthesizer that would eventually become her first full-length record titled Sugarcane in 2019. She collaborates with her partner, Mark Robertson (multi-instrumentalist, engineer) in their homestead studio where they mostly grow vegetables and record with homemade equipment where none of the knobs are labeled. During the pandemic they recorded a handful of acoustic songs onto tape released as All At Once. She started a twangy side project with her sister, Sallie Ford, called The Barbaras. They recorded Oh My God Barbara in 2020 on Orcas Island, WA.

Her latest album In the Movement will be released on March 10th at Mississippi Studios. It features a wide range of classic guitar riffs from Mitch Gonzales (Mitch and the Melody Makers), Jeff Munger (Floating Easements), and Galen Ballinger. Alongside drummer Kyle Hartelt and pedal steel player James Greenan, the new album offers a sonic continuation of previous works weaving nostalgia into modern rock’n’roll.

Formed in 2012 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, the experimental trio Elephant Gym interlace various threads of jazz, electronic, and classical into a singular patchwork of contemporary math-and post-rock. At once evoking the towering, boisterous essence of elephants, and the acrobatic, dexterous nature of a gymnast, Elephant Gym’s sound feeds off tension and unlikely contrasts.Elephant Gym songs often find bassist KT Chang as the lead voice, her nimble and expressive playing style a signature imprint of the Elephant Gym sonic character. Sibling Tell Chang meshes deftly on guitar and occasionally keys, with Chia-Chin Tu’s elastic drumming as a malleable anchor point between his bandmates’ funk-and-jazz-infused chops. The trio’s tenure has seen the release of a handful of EPs and three full lengths, Angle (2014),Underwater (2018), and Dreams (2022), as well as a number of international and local collaborations that span the spectrum of the arts, ranging from theater productions to wind orchestras to traditional percussion ensembles

    YUVEES

YUVEES are a Portland, Oregon based band that deals in lament, frustation and cathartic release. Influenced by bands like Mission of Burma, Pere Ubu, and comps like Punk 45, No New York & Red Snerts-their upcoming album “Dead Keys” brings an onslaught of bent guitars, throbbing bass, crashing drums, and manic vocal performances direct and without apology. Despite having been recorded in basements and budget studios throughout Portland, this record maintains a solid fidelity without aggressively hiding blemishes. This all makes for a driving, sometimes funny and often harrowing result.

    Ogre

Three knuckleheads. Two basses. One drum kit. Zero guitars. Always. Loud and odd, Ogre is fresh off their third album in two years, playing to packed-out venues across Portland and beyond. Their latest release "ogre 3" is a compact, shrill experience that calls upon Shellac, Osees, and Lightning Bolt influences. They must be seen to be believed.

    Guitar

Guitar, is the recording project of Portland born and raised Saia Kuli. With the help of members of associated music acts Nick Normal, Alley Science and Deja Blue, Guitar comes to life on stage as a nimble indie rock and roll four-piece. Guitar’s most recent release is the EP “Casting Spells on Turtlehead” out on Julia’s War and Spared Flesh Records February 7th.
