Jesse Daniel has been a well respected name within traditional country music fans for years. Known for his relentless work ethic, roaring live shows and true to life songwriting, he has earned his place among the heavy hitters of today’s industry. The California native is blazing the trail for a new wave of traditional artists, bringing his kind of country music to stages all over the world. With three full length studio records and a newly release live album, he continues to rival the greats of the genre with his level of creative output. There are many making traditional country music in modern times, but there is no one making it like Daniel; his sound is uniquely his own, while rooted in the tradition of his Bakersfield heroes like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. His new single titled “Workin’ Hard (Day and Night)” is a tip of the hat to Merle and is prominently featured on Netflix as the theme music for comic Dusty Slay’s new comedy special “Workin’ Man”. Jesse and his band have an extensive US and European tour booked for 2024 and there no telling here this new year may take him.

    Conan

Conan are as heavy as interplanetary thunder amplified through the roaring black hole anus of Azathoth. Remember that sentence, for it is writ large in virgin blood on the walls of the forgotten temple of Bol-Krastor, deep in the steaming forests of forgotten Lemuria. Conan, a monumentally brutal three piece(in the grand tradition of all the hallowed three pieces through time) hold a sinew-tight line and an iron-grip command over the uber-synchronised powerchord changes and tempo-shifts of the anti-holy trio of bass, drums and guitar. Two weary yet defiant men have the task of vocalising wretched thoughts over the turgid weight of Conan’s metalized bombast. They bear it well, for the task is immense.

    Psychic Trash

For the better part of the last 15 years, the duo of Max Dameron (guit/vox) and Sam Ford (drums/vox) have been too weird and too wild for this lame-ass planet. After enjoying vagabond stints living in Portland, Los Angeles, and Brooklyn, they now call Detroit home. Here they rebuild, out of the scraps and wreckage of the 21st century, something which casts aside any rules or adherence to banal tropes.

Specializing in the unexpected, Max and Sam have wrought an individual sound that's as much post-Melvins sludge punk as it is futurist prog metal. Their forthcoming self-titled debut, recorded in 2022 at High-Bias in Detroit, puts on display the fruits of their metamorphosis. From the soaring triumphal fuzz of "Uncanny Valley" or the sweep and thrust of "House of Butterflies” their craft is precise, they're just making up their own shapes to sculpt.

Times change and artists mature: now under the name PSYCHIC TRASH, Ford and Dameron come to Riding Easy Records as veterans turning a fresh page, reinvigorated at the prospect of forging a new path and the beneficiaries of about a decade and a half's slog through the underground. Psychic Trash's self-titled debut is unmistakably uncompromising, a little theatrical, intermittently manic, and deceptively broad in style for just how much punk rests beneath.

Change and perspective expand quickly in tight quarters—and no one knows that as well as married couple Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker. It’s true of each of their time as queer kids in need of an escape from conservative towns; of their years living together in a van, traveling the country to play music and busk; of settling down in a studio apartment just prior to the pandemic. And now, partnered with a rhythm section and produced by Chris Funk of the Decemberists, they’re harnessing the lessons from this closeness and cracking them wide open into a whole new world with their band Glitterfox.

The duo first met at a coffee house open mic in Long Beach, California, where Walker had recently relocated after growing up in North Carolina and Virginia. She quickly fell in love with Igoa’s voice, knowing that if their vocals and her guitar came together that would only flourish— and it did, the two now married and having spent more than a decade as a pair. Musically, channeling Walker’s Southern warmth through Southern California indie shine, Glitterfox carves out lithe, nostalgia-fueled anthems powered by the intimacy of their relationship. “A lot of our songs are about serious challenges in our lives,” Walker says. “All the struggles in my life get poured into the music, but always with this silver lining of hope, this drive not to quit before the miracle happens. Making a living as an independent musician is hard, but we’ve always had each other and always made it work.”

    Jeremy Ferrara

“Certainty and clarity are like everything else, yeah, they come and go.”

These are the kind of gentle reminders you get when you listen to Portland songwriter Jeremy Ferrara. Regarded as “open-hearted and determinedly honest” by Americana UK, and as “exuding as much gentleness and vulnerability as anything in Nick Drake’s catalog” by Americana Highways, Ferrara has had a storied first few years. Opening for acts such as John Craigie and Field Medic, touring the US and Europe multiple times, and signing to a label, all while working as the guitarist in fellow rising star Margo Cilker’s touring band. Rarely do folk songwriters remain as centered, as earnest, and as entertaining. Ferrara comes through on his latest Darkness Is A Bright Sound with a full band, heralding his philosophical delivery of songs full of gentle acceptance, and purified positivity. Recorded in LA with producer Luke Temple, the album is Ferrara’s 3rd full-length, and it is out March 29th on American Standard Time Records and A For Effort Records.

    Tispur

Tispur is a dream-folk project fronted by Samwise Carlson which forms intricate guitar, dream-like vocals, and ornate lyricism to excite evocative imagery of imaginary worlds. Samwise is known for their angelic vocal style, impressive range and gently hypnotic, moving performances akin to the spirits of Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, and Joanna Newsom.

    LASKA

The songwriters in question are Hannah and Mookie Morton. The work in question? That one takes a little more juice. Sometimes their work presents as harmonies and melodies meticulously placing themselves like the careful legs of a balletic spider in awe of its own symmetry and progress. Sometimes their work arrives as an overdue outpouring. Starting somewhere in the body - ecstatic as the seed of a pure and wordless truth, then erupting as a cathartic yawp. Bonded by blood, forged in psychic battle, sisters Hannah and Mookie channel their lived in experiences into music that glides through genres like a canoe on a quiet lake. Stage tested and bad to the bone. LASKA is the sound you hear when you're inside of an indelible memory. They are currently based in Portland, Oregon.

    w/ Yungatita

When we last left the arguably interesting adventures of Cheekface, they'd released the minor phenomenon "Emphatically No." The band's sophomore album bowed at #1 on Bandcamp's alternative and vinyl sales charts, became a college radio staple, and propelled the L.A. talk-singing trio into packed houses of Cheek Freaks across the US. So I guess now is a good time for Cheekface to return with their third LP, "Too Much to Ask."

You might say "Too Much to Ask" builds on the strengths of the first two Cheekface albums, but also refines and evolves their sound a little, and why would I argue with you? The band's songwriting battery of guitarist/singer Greg Katz and bassist Amanda Tannen show their lyrical trademark, a strangely inviting sad and sideways wit, right from the jump — "life hands you problems, make problem-ade," they announce in the almost-unglued 1-minute-25-second album opener "When Life Hands You Problems" — and then across the record's 11 tracks, the band proceeds to make hay out of many of life's mysteries.

There's the problematic popularity of quinoa (the what-if-Stephen-Malkmus-fronted-Television headnodder "Pledge Drive"), the boundless desires of American imperialists and the political complacency that enables them (the relentlessly hooky and bleak "You Always Want to Bomb the Middle East"), the physical toll of daily routine ("I would get so much done if I didn't have to sleep anymore, but then I would be tired," they observe on The Cars-via-Rosenstock "I Feel So Weird"), the questionable marketing of a certain quacky soap bottle doctor (beach-blanket strummer "Election Day," which features a guest verse from kindred spirit Sidney Gish), and the seemingly sabotaged pointlessness of it all — pick any track really, but I like "coffee from the bank / Fritos isn't free / I only want to be with other people like me" from "We Need a Bigger Dumpster," a singalong single that exposes Cheekface's most fundamental components as clear as a deep-sea fish: a simple drum beat, a nasty bassline, a neatly catchy guitar riff, a suprisingly memorable chorus, and a funny fatalistic wisdom that unites it all.

    Frecks

“Frecks” is comprised of two twenty-something year-old members residing in Portland, Oregon. The lead singer/songwriter and producer Jayden has been writing music since her early teen years and draws inspiration from all aspects of her life. Pulling from concepts of introspection and undying love, she aims to tug on heartstrings with dreamy guitar riffs and haunting melodies.

    Pulsa

PULSA is Kyle Indigo, Sei Harris, Ross Charland, and Daniel McIntire. Living in an RV during 2020, Kyle wrote and recorded a collection of dreamy experimental songs which would later become PULSA's first album 'Two Moons' (2021). After the release of 'Two Moons', the band started playing DIY shows around Portland, OR. Missing the dirty garage psych scenes of Detroit and Grand Rapids, MI, the band began exploring darker pastures with stronger doses of fuzz and reverb. PULSA's live set is ever evolving with a new love for improvisation, freak-outs, and group vocals.

The musicians siphon from bluegrass, old time, classical, country, and pop. Bursting with jaw-dropping virtuosity; playfully irreverent stage banter; stunning four-part harmony; imaginative arrangements;a refreshingly eclectic repertoire; and a healthy dose of lady rage, Big Richard is poised to penetrate the Americana music world and beyond. It’s been less than two years sinceHighs in the Minusesbecame Charlotte Cornfield’s break-out—a magnetic mission-statement for the Toronto songwriter described by Rolling Stone as“Canada’s best-kept secret.” Cornfield emerged from pandemic seclusion with new fans, raisedexpectations, and her first major US tour. She could have kept touring forever; she could havefled to the woods with a four-track. She could have done anything. What she did was jump intoan old Subaru, driving seven hours south to the Hudson Valley. The car didn’t have any A/C; shehad onlyrecently earned her license; and she had never met the producer she was drivingdown to meet. But when Cornfield arrived in Hurley, NY, at the red-steepled church that is nowDreamland Recording Studios, she was ready for whatever came next. “There was this lettinggo of some of the strongheaded-ness that I think I used to have,” she says, “and an embracingof the open-endedness of life.”Cornfield had come to Hurley to work with producer Josh Kaufman, thrilled by his sublimerecordings with Cassandra Jenkins, Anais Mitchell and his own band, Bonny Light Horseman. The album they’d now make together,Could Have Done Anything,is a testament to Cornfield’suncommon life and all its possibilities, an acknowledgment that the best musicians can turnfleeting moments into timeless songs. Overnine magnetic tracks, the singer-songwriter beginsyet another chapter: gazing in the rear-view to understand where she’s been; squinting throughthe sunset to see what’s ahead.Calmer than I was,she sings in the album’s final moments.Stronger than I was / older than I was / less angry than I was...—and finally—happier than I was/ happier than I was / happier than I was...Whereas Cornfield’s preceding albums were made in familiar settings, with troupes of friends, her latest long-player reaches into the unknown. Kaufman and Cornfield (who went to schoolfor jazz drums) played every instrument themselves, from ringing guitars to cozy piano,Hammond B3, pedal steel and synthesizers. Together with engineer D. James Goodwin (KevinMorby, Whitney) and assistant engineer Gillian Pelkonen, the pair worked swiftly, impulsively, trying to shrink the gap between having an idea and putting it on tape. The resulting sound is atonce elaborate and unrehearsed; there’s a sense that it’s coming together—and coming alive—at the very moment it’s being made.

    Robert Henry & The Repeaters
As the frontman for Robert Henry & The
Repeaters, I found my country music passion at 17 after a heavy metal phase in high school. Influenced by American country's rich blend of blues and storytelling traditions, our band, formed in 2018, channels legends like Waylon Jennings in our unique sound. Our latest album, released on December 2nd, captures the essence of discontent, with standout tracks like "Demons & Dreams."

    Rose Gerber

Based in Portland, OR. Rose Gerber is An intrepid American roots explorer, incorporating country, folk, rock, alt-rock, and alt-country into a seamless signature aesthetic. As a writer she’s both sensitive and sassy, equally gifted penning Heartland rock n’ roll and heartbreaking balladry. Her songs are snapshots of everyday living that show the meaning in the seemingly mundane. Rose’s vocals are elegantly emotive, and she has been favorably compared to Natalie Merchant, Gillian Welch, and Patty Griffin.

Composed of four black clad players from Denver, Colorado, the band’s sound draws from the deep wells of black metal, gothic country, and a mericana - creating a thunderous and uniquely American genre of metal all to their own. After ten years of existence, the band presents AMERICAN GOTHIC - a defining statement of Western heavy music that explores the dark soul of the nation itself. This time working alongside accomplished producer Arthur Rizk (EternalChampion, Kreator) the band brings an aggressive and expansive vision to life in a new full length LP.Led by powerful riffing, bleak melodic sensibilities, and pointed songwriting, this record serves as a funeral for theAmerican dream. Caked in dust, and buried deep in blood and gunpowder, it paints a brutal and beautiful portrait, and sees WAYFARER elevate their unique and genuine brand of metal to new heights.“What we have now is a world full of oil drillers, and railroad barons. Cattle thieves and company men. This is the new American Gothic.”

    Sonja

In 2014, Melissa Moore birthed the idea for the Gothic Rock Heavy Metalband Sonja while having an existential meltdown on a strung out flight home from Melbourne to Philadelphia. After calling drummer Grzesiek Czapla upon landing and later inviting bassist Ben Brand, the power trio plunged deep into secret places where fear and pain were transformed into obsessive pophook-laced metal. The years that followed were filled with ruinous sexuality, gender apocalypse, casual encounters, generosity, discretion, danger, desire, paranoia, passion, and endless rock n roll."Loud Arriver" is the band’s 2022 debut full length that was released on CruzDel Sur Music (mixed by Arthur Rizk). Featuring the Zev Deans directed music video for "Nylon Nights", Sonja began the perpetual cycle of touring the US and Europe. Festival and tour appearances continue as the bandwrites their follow up album and are pulled deeper into submission to their goddess, Heavy Metal.

    Coco

Coco—the project of Maia Friedman, Oliver Hill, and Dan Molad—began as an experiment of sorts; three friends writing songs for nothing other than the ritual of doing so. “There’s a mutual admiration and trust among us,” the band shares. “It allows a ‘first thought best thought’ mentality.” Their vast and varied individual creative histories—notably with Dirty Projectors, Lucius, and Pavo Pavo—inform an illustrious, collective sensibility for songcraft. Coco’s self-titled debut gathered fervent acclaim from tastemakers at NPR, BBC, SiriusXM, and Spotify among others. The trio headlined packed rooms in New York City, Los Angeles, and London, made their festival debut at End of the Road, and supported Kevin Morby on a national tour.

Since, life has flown wildly forward for the members of Coco—Oliver getting married, Dan getting engaged, Maia giving birth to her first child. Their highly anticipated sophomore release—starkly titled ‘2’—honors these transformations. On opener “Any Other Way” Coco meditates on change from a widescreen perspective: The leaf and the body, each in their time, turns on a schedule, turns on a dime. Maia lays a lush bed of shoegaze guitars; Dan's builds ecstasy from downtempo drums; Oliver stirs a current of hypnotically looping basslines. The song is a stunning microcosm of this band's specific genius: carving space for each musical personality to shine, without the shadows of excess or distraction.

“Though it's only been a few years, the band has seen us through fundamental transformations in each of our lives, which we are fortunate enough to process together.” Self-produced, with collaboration from Adrian Olsen (Lucy Dacus, Fruit Bats, Bedouine), the album is sensuous and spellike, its sonics varying from lush, shoegaze guitars, to dusky electronica, to jangly 60’s pop. Maia, Oliver, and Dan continue their sacred practice—arriving to each other empty-handed and open-hearted, finding power in three equal parts.

AJ Lee and Blue Summit made their first appearance in Santa Cruz in 2015. Led by singer, songwriter, and mandolinist, AJ Lee, the bluegrass band has performed all over the world, but finds home in California’s Bay Area. In 2019, they released their debut album, Like I Used To. Their second full length project, I’ll Come Back, came out August 2021 - with national touring in support of the record ongoing.

Unlike their first record, which featured experimentation with session musicians and electric instruments, the new project is a pure reflection of the live sound of the group, hearkening back to their acoustic roots. Each band member performs at their peak, and the variety of songs on the record caters to their broad fanbase. Certain tracks (“Put Your Head Down,” and “Faithful,”) fall more in the classic bluegrass realm of songwriting, while others (“Lemons and Tangerines,” and “I’ll Come Back,”) fall into that hard-to-define realm of acoustic Americana that blends mesmerizing lyricism and acoustic mastery.

Although falling loosely under the bluegrass label, AJLBS generally plays sans banjo, with Sullivan Tuttle and Scott Gates on steel stringed acoustic guitars, AJ on mandolin, Jan Purat on fiddle, and Chad Bowen on upright bass - a configuration effectively used to create unique space and texture in the arrangements not as commonly found in the music of their peers.  Drawing from influences such as country, soul, swing, rock, and jam music, the band uses the lens of bluegrass as a vessel through which to express and explore the thread that binds and unifies all great music.
