The live show is where Novacane thrives. At the helm is singer/songwriter Dylan Latimer, who lives in a constant state of improvisation. Novacane is proud to have had the opportunity to play Portland’s most revered club venues with sold out shows at Doug Fir, Mississippi Studios, and the Holocene as well as WOW Hall in Eugene.
Bug Séance
Bug Seance is a 5-piece heavy/dreamy outfit based in Portland, OR. In its five years of existence, the project has evolved to become a thoughtfully crafted blend of hardcore, emo, post-rock, and shoegaze elements. Last year, Bug Seance had the opportunity to play with emo legends Algernon Cadwallader on their west coast reunion tour. Bug Seance has also played alongside acts such as Glacier Veins, Glitterer, Fred Mascherino (of Taking Back Sunday), MAITA, and Soft Kill. Since 2021 the Bugs have embarked on two west coast tours, a couple runs in Washington state, and a week-long east coast tour. Their upcoming EP promises to be their best work yet, professionally recorded in Portland and layered with twinkly synth lines, reverberating vocals, and distorted guitar riffs.
Pileup
Pileup is a group of anywhere from one to six people in Portland, Oregon, consisting of—but not limited to—guitarist and lyricist Nathan Urbach, lead guitarist Elian Conroy, drummer Kyle Rosse, bassist Gray Hunter, rhythm guitarist Isabel Zacharias, and keyboardist Jordan Krinsky. Their debut LP Creature was released via Bud Tapes on October 7th, 2022. “Guided by life experiences, Lindsay Lou's sound and songwriting continues to evolve and intertwine her sturdy Bluegrass roots with progressive Americana and Folk.” – PBS“I saw a literal manifestation of the sacred feminine, and had this profound sense that I was meant to embody it,” recalls celebrated singer-songwriter Lindsay Lou after journeying through a hallucinogenic ritual that would inform the way she processed waves of grief in the sea of change ahead of her. The loss of her grandmother, the end of her marriage, and the overwhelming turmoil of COVID lockdowns found the Nashville-based artist on a spiritual journey of self-knowledge and healing with this gift from the mystic swirl. On her new album Queen of Time (due September 29th from Kill Rock Stars), Lou explores that quest across ten tracks of tender, heartbreakingly beautiful music.
With this new vision of womanhood in mind, Lou began to see a throughline from her grandmother, to herself, to the art she was creating. Her 2018 release, Southland (recorded with her former band, The Flatbellys), felt like the first chapter to a greater story that was unfolding; with this release, the theme deepened. “It started with my grandma. She was the unattainable woman in a way,” Lou explains. “She had 12 kids and ran homeless shelters and was always taking people in. She felt that her calling was to be a mother to everyone – this communal caregiver – but it also meant that in belonging to everyone, she also belonged to no one. I realized that this is the catch-22 of anyone who is a woman unto herself. Women, first and foremost, belong to themselves, so nobody can really have them; but, there's also this element of self-sacrificing and giving to the idea of the feminine.”
Lou’s vocals are a powerful companion to her songwriting. “In an era when style and trends can become genericana, [Lou] focuses on the song,” said No Depression. “It is infectious and joyful, soulful even.” The undeniable centerpiece throughout Queen of Time, Lou’s voice is a molasses-sweet instrument equally capable of clarion ache, slicing deep into the soul. The daughter of a literal coal-miner and millwright, and the granddaughter of a teacher gone Rainbow Gathering healer, Lou honed her honest and resonant style with her bluegrass-inspired band, Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys, and Michigan supergroup, Sweet Water Warblers (Rachael Davis, May Erlewine), excavating elements of bluegrass, folk, Americana, and soulful pop for their emotional depths. The Warblers’ debut album, The Dream That Holds This Child (2020), was dubbed “a testament to the trio’s range” by Billboard, running the gamut of blues, gospel, soul, and Appalachian folk.

Jarle Bernhoft has a new album coming out in 2023, a fact that surprises the man himself. The Norwegian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist intended to have a break from recording this year. Now, he finds himself reaching back out to the world with new music and a new outlook, propelling himself back to a global stage with a renewed ambition. Youmay have first come across a young Jarle as lead singer of rock power quartet Span. Hel ived in North London where he enjoyed critical acclaim and a cult following. After they disbanded in 2005, he went solo, and soul, as Bernhoft. He employed live looping techniques, using a loop pedal to layer his vocals and instrumental parts, creating intricate and dynamic arrangements. The single "C'mon Talk," became a viral sensation showcasing this, earning Bernhoft millions of views on YouTube and introducing him to a global audience. This culminated in the international success of‘Islander’(2014), an album that explored themes of identity and self-discovery, blending elements of folk, pop, and R&B.The album received critical acclaim and further solidified Bernhoft's reputation as a musical innovator. He became the first non-American to be nominated for the Best R&B AlbumGrammy. His profile swelled with appearances on the Conan O’Brien and Ellen De Generes shows, he was about to embark on a huge US tour and then, as far as the rest of the world was concerned, he disappeared.“I lived in New York City for two years. Then my manager died,” he explains of his close friend who was his partner throughout his career, “My ambitions have always been more about music and less about success. He took my music and was ambitious. He had the brains, I had the music.

w/ Ghostwoman
When times are tough, or you’re feeling worn down, you start longing for a life of total peace. A lifewhere there are no fights, arguments or lies; where there is no such thing as disappointment and youractions have no consequences. Some might call it a“fantasy world”. Genre-jumping Belgian trioBrutus call it the “Unison Life”–a phrase that titles their third studio album.Unison Lifeis about all thestuff that wears you down in the first place. It’s the ugliness, the pain, and the acts of bravery that getyou through it all. Beginning with a portrait of contentment and unravelling from there, the album goesinto battle and asks what really counts. In their own words:“Is this Unison Life a hoax? Or a quest?”
Since their formation in 2014, Brutus have made a name for themselves with their restless, emotionally raw rock that traverses the landscape of metal, punk, post-hardcore and beyond–often inthe same song. The three members first met in their hometown of Leuven, where they cut their teethplaying in different local bands. Their influences are wide and varied. Drummer/vocalist StefanieMannaerts–who grew up above a music shop run by her family–is into a variety of genres frompost-metal to electronic music. Bassist Peter Mulders is more of apunk guy, while guitarist StijnVanhoegaerden is into country and more melodic rock. Their diverse tastes come together throughBrutus to create a sound that’s as heavy as it is unexpected, full of beauty and surprises.
From their 2017 debut albumBurst,to 2019’sNest, to releasing a May 2019 performance at theirhometown venue Handelsbeurs Concert Hall as a live album during the pandemic, Brutus has levelledup at every turn. However, it wasn’t untilUnison Lifethat Brutus had the time and space to reallyconsider their direction. “I wanted every song to feel like the last song we’ll ever write,” Mannaertsexplains.“It killed me inside because it’s almost an impossibly high standard, but that was mypersonal goal for this album. It was a two-year questof trying to do better, and I’m very proud of whatwe’ve done together.”
Brutus worked onUnison Lifefor a year and a half, though most of that time was spent hanging out. When they weren’t stuck at home in quarantine they were holed up in their rehearsal space in Ghent, making the most of the free time afforded to them by the pandemic by experimenting, tradinginfluences, talking and cooking together.Between writing sessions, they scoured second-handwebsites for different things–a lot of amps, guitars, basses, a bass synth, effects pedals, even somechimes–to play with.“There was always something new we tried. Not because the song asked for it,or for the sake of it, but because we were experimenting,” says Mulders. “I don't know how this albumwould have sounded if we had to write it between tours and didn’t have as much time to experimentwith the songs.”

Tango Alpha Tango
Comprised of and founded by husband-and-wife duo, Nathan Trueb and Mirabai Carter, Tango Alpha Tango has wowed crowds from summer festivals (leaping from amplifiers in celebration) to the nearly 400,000 fans who’ve streamed the band’s 2014 live in-studio set for the famed Seattle radio station, KEXP 90.3 FM, inducing grins from their signature oomph. The band celebrates the release of a brand new single entitled, "Enemy" and it might be their most punishing and vindictive offering yet. This latest song comes off of the heels of the band's 2020 release, "You'll Be Something" which gave us an introspective look into the band's darker and more emotional side through their first music video. Come hear the latest from the band with their legendary live set that has even seen Trueb climbing from the stage to the balcony with his guitar slung on his back. It seems no stage is big enough for Tango Alpha Tango's raucous sound.
Les Gold
Portland indie rock outfit Les Gold was founded by frontman Jenson Tuomi and guitarist Tim Kaye, and consists of bassist Jake Jarvis, drummer Alexander Geiszler, and lead guitarist Pete Abraham. The band has cultivated a sound that mixes homegrown Northwest indie rock with elements of folk rock, dream pop, desert rock, surf, and other influences. Les Gold showcases catchy, poppy melodies and tones layered over unique vocal harmonies and often macabre lyrics – crafting a sound that’s been described as ‘gloom disco’ and ‘bummer fun’.
Since releasing their first EP ‘ More Silver’ in late 2018, Les Gold has toured the west coast, opened for major artists like Young The Giant, Deep Sea Diver, Horse Feathers, Hot Flash Heatwave, and more while expanding their reach to hundreds of thousands of listeners across North America and Europe. As the band has grown and developed their sound, they’ve stayed true to their roots and remained pioneers of the ‘bummer fun’ genre. With a strong cast and sponsorships from local legends like Benson Amps, 64 Audio, and Secret Aardvark Hot Sauce, the band has continued to grow in popularity – releasing their Sophomore EP ‘The Gloom Room’ in late 2021 and receiving immediate acclaim from major outlets like Earmilk, Under the Radar, Portland Monthly, and more. In 2023, Les Gold prepares to release their debut album.
Molter
Molter is the brainchild of Chris Benson and Dan Phelps, two persons much inspired by the fuzz and laziness of Dinosaur Jr. and the casual dissonance of Sonic Youth. Molter forces upon their music a heavy dose of 90s nostalgia and a sardonic wit that can potentially keep audiences from going outside to vape.
Together, Chris and Dan form a powerhouse collaboration that side hugs multiple flavors of alt rock but isn’t really looking for a relationship.Come Molt with Us.

EAGLE CLAWPallbearer
Pallbearer navigate the space between disquiet and serenity with a singular intensity. At times poetic and blistering, their music is a heartfelt meditation on isolation, trauma and mental breakdown, framed by the possibility of redemption and the quiet, aching beauty of escape.Their songs provide a singular perspective into the pain that lies at the heart of everyday experience, the musical intersection where struggle collides with the will to carry on.
Helms Alee
Seattle three-piece Helms Alee has announced a new album Keep This Be The Way available April 29th via Sargent House. Across the span of their first five studio albums, the trio zeroed in on different aspects of their sound - a blend of lilting siren songs, crushing Northwest thunder and sludge, angular econo-rock, and heady guitar popwhile retaining their no-frills, meat-and-potatoes approach in the studio. But with this Helms Alee expanded have their palette by delving into the production possibilities afforded by recording the album themselves, creating their most dynamic and technicolored work to date. This new approach is immediately evident on first single and album opener “See Sights Smell Smells,” where reverse cymbal crashes, fragmented piano, layered drums, woozy drones, saxophone freak-outs, and trippy vocal treatments transport the listener to an altered state of exhilarated anticipation. The song is accompanied by a video created by Allen Watke whose video art consists primarily of analog equipment with an emphasis on VHS dubbing, glitching & manipulation.

Trans Am
Trans Am is a band that has never compromised. Originally from North Bethesda, Maryland, Trans Am is considered fathers of the instrumental post-rock sound of the 1990s. Since then the band - Phil Manley, Sebastian Thomson and Nathan Means - has added vocals and spanned genres from metal to house to progressive rock. They exploited Casio keyboards for cacophonous lo-fi sounds. They played fully electronic sets when most of their contemporaries were sticking exclusively to guitars. They pioneered early millennium fad Electroclash. Today, they continue to set their own course.
On new album California Hotel, Trans Am borrowed ideas from My Bloody Valentine, John Carpenter, DAF, Led Zeppelin, Air, Sade and David Gilmore, among others. The result is an incredibly rich range of sounds that retain a pulsating energy.
California Hotel was constructed in four one-week bursts that took place over two years deep in San Francisco’s El Studio. Bits and pieces of songs like “Expansions” and “Alles Verbotten” were recorded during live jams, lost due to unique file management and remerged for inspection and improvement – often multiple times.

Cindy LeeFor Patrick Flegel, Cindy Lee is more than just a recording music project. "Singers like Patsy Cline and The Supremes carried me through the hardest times of my life," explains Flegel, "and also provided the soundtrack to the best times."
Following the dissolution of Canadian experimental indie band Women, Flegel would delve deeper into songwriting that bends further toward high atmospherics and bracing melodies – a unique space where splendor naturally collides with experimentation. Delivering moments of sheer beauty through somber reflections on longing and loneliness, Cindy Lee is something to hold onto in a world of disorder.
Flegel found inspiration for Cindy Lee in the form of Karen Carpenter, drawing on the singer / drummer's early recordings as well as her look and style. "I found a deep interest and comfort in Karen's story, which is a cautionary tale about the monstrosity of show business, stardom at a young age and being a misfit looking for connection. The darkness and victimizing tabloid sensationalism she suffered is easily tempered and overwhelmed by her earnest output, her artistry, her tireless work ethic. Something utterly unique and magical takes shape in the negative space, out of exclusion. What I relate to in her has to do with what is hidden, what is unknown."Freak Heat Waves
The Freaks are back with their fifth LP, Mondo Tempo, courtesy of Vancouver's Mood Hut label. A heady cocktail that blends elements of post-punk, psych, dub, ambient, house, and techno, the duo's latest release showcases their signature sound injected with dancehall grooves, ambient textures, trance mantras and midi smoothness. With their most alluring output to date Freak Heat Waves have solidified their reputation as one of the most unpredictable and exciting acts around.

“I imagine myself playing these songs in a small club that is slowly burning,” says A. Savage of his second solo record, Several Songs about Fire. Born in 1986 in Denton, Texas and raised around the newspaper where his parents both worked, by 2012 A. Savage became a headline of his own as the co-frontman of Parquet Courts. After more than a decade in New York, Savage has left the city and the United States, marking his exit with a masterpiece of maturity and a worthy corollary to his first solo venture, 2017’s Thawing Dawn. “Fire is something you have to escape from, and in a way this album is about escaping from something. This album is a burning building, and these songs are things I’d leave behind to save myself.”Produced by John Parish on a 1” 16-track in just ten days in Bristol, studded by the support of Cooper and Le Bon as well as saxophonist Euan Hinshelwood (Cate Le Bon), drummer Dylan Hadley (Kamikaze Palm Tree,White Fence), and violinist Magdalena McLean (Caroline), the album is a devotional study in tradition—and something all Savage’s own. “No decision was possible to defer,” says Parish. “I loved erasing good, but not great takes.” Le Bon describes the song as having “such a strong character that they would naturally dictate what was needed from everyone.” The end result is tantamount to psychic odyssey, with “Le Grand Balloon” suggesting a South American lounge where the guiro respirates into a damp crowd; “Elvis in the Army” placing us in a subterranean venue where the livid, ratifying cymbal raises the room’s blood pressure; and “Mountain Time”, evoking an austere waltz playing in a desolate house, returning those listening to life.
Influenced by the disparate vantage points of Sybille Baier and Townes Van Zandt, Savage joins a canon of songwriters whose project is a constantly dilating aperture and perspective. Opening the album with “Hurtin’ or Healed,” where he stoically observes “in the mirror someone’s crying/ with the same eyes as me,” Savage slowly marries the bleak drift of secular life with the grandness of antiquity. If in that track he describes the “gods held my heels,” in another he decries the selfsame gods “who don’t exist or care.” In rendering the signage of laundromats and threats of debt collectors as glistering and totemic as the scope of mountains, rivers, seas, and skies, Savage finds hopes and curses in equal measure—inviting the listener to consider a life in which attention is a religion, and the body is the divine text. Like the survivor of exodus, Savage says: “I don’t really remember the process of writing. I just see the evidence of it when I reopen a notebook.” Several Songs About Fire stands as an act of nearly libidinal rebellion against a moment when so much of life is the blue light of screens. This is an album whose topic is no less than the sublime: the moments in which a sensory experience becomes a holiness or possession of its own, and the self floats above it.

Jesse Daniel has been a well respected name within traditional country music fans for years. Known for his relentless work ethic, roaring live shows and true to life songwriting, he has earned his place among the heavy hitters of today’s industry. The California native is blazing the trail for a new wave of traditional artists, bringing his kind of country music to stages all over the world. With three full length studio records and a newly release live album, he continues to rival the greats of the genre with his level of creative output. There are many making traditional country music in modern times, but there is no one making it like Daniel; his sound is uniquely his own, while rooted in the tradition of his Bakersfield heroes like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. His new single titled “Workin’ Hard (Day and Night)” is a tip of the hat to Merle and is prominently featured on Netflix as the theme music for comic Dusty Slay’s new comedy special “Workin’ Man”. Jesse and his band have an extensive US and European tour booked for 2024 and there no telling here this new year may take him.

Conan
Conan are as heavy as interplanetary thunder amplified through the roaring black hole anus of Azathoth. Remember that sentence, for it is writ large in virgin blood on the walls of the forgotten temple of Bol-Krastor, deep in the steaming forests of forgotten Lemuria. Conan, a monumentally brutal three piece(in the grand tradition of all the hallowed three pieces through time) hold a sinew-tight line and an iron-grip command over the uber-synchronised powerchord changes and tempo-shifts of the anti-holy trio of bass, drums and guitar. Two weary yet defiant men have the task of vocalising wretched thoughts over the turgid weight of Conan’s metalized bombast. They bear it well, for the task is immense.
Psychic Trash
For the better part of the last 15 years, the duo of Max Dameron (guit/vox) and Sam Ford (drums/vox) have been too weird and too wild for this lame-ass planet. After enjoying vagabond stints living in Portland, Los Angeles, and Brooklyn, they now call Detroit home. Here they rebuild, out of the scraps and wreckage of the 21st century, something which casts aside any rules or adherence to banal tropes.
Specializing in the unexpected, Max and Sam have wrought an individual sound that's as much post-Melvins sludge punk as it is futurist prog metal. Their forthcoming self-titled debut, recorded in 2022 at High-Bias in Detroit, puts on display the fruits of their metamorphosis. From the soaring triumphal fuzz of "Uncanny Valley" or the sweep and thrust of "House of Butterflies” their craft is precise, they're just making up their own shapes to sculpt.
Times change and artists mature: now under the name PSYCHIC TRASH, Ford and Dameron come to Riding Easy Records as veterans turning a fresh page, reinvigorated at the prospect of forging a new path and the beneficiaries of about a decade and a half's slog through the underground. Psychic Trash's self-titled debut is unmistakably uncompromising, a little theatrical, intermittently manic, and deceptively broad in style for just how much punk rests beneath.
