PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
w/ Laura Hopkins

Throwing Muses’ lynchpin, Kristin Hersh’s prolific career has seen her heralded queen of the alternative release. In 2018 she announced a new partnership with Fire Records that made possible the release of her tenth studio album, ‘Possible Dust Clouds’.

“I’m thrilled to find some like-minded teammates in the shifting paradigm of the recording industry. Together, we can do a lot more damage than we could ever pull off alone, and damage is what’s called for when an old guard is falling. This is gonna be a swell party.”

‘Possible Dust Clouds’ is a highly personalised sociopathic gem delivered as a futuristic rewriting of how music works, a melodious breeze with a tail wind of venomous din. Enveloping the juxtaposition of the concept of ‘dark sunshine’, a brooding solo record created with friends to expand her off-kilter sonic vision; a squally, squeaky mix of discordant beauty. Feedback and phasing gyrate from simply strummed normality, imagine Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine cranking up a Dylan couplet.

“Sometimes the most subversive thing I can do musically is adhere to standard song structure, sometimes the creepiest chords are the ones we’ve heard before, twisted into different shapes, and sometimes a story is lived a thousand times before we can ride it like a roller coaster. Nothing wholly unfamiliar is gonna make you look twice. When you can describe a record as being “deceptively” anything, you’re hinting at the sociopathic nature of music. Something I love.

Imagine truly buying your own sunshine and charm, but also your darkness and violence; the two sides of your psychology showing each other off in relief. Songs can do that…we can’t, really. Darkness we’ve seen. Dark sunshine? Still cool. I usually play all the instruments on my solo records – essentially the sound of having no friends – but sociopaths can’t realise their potential without people to work out their grievances on and this record is a freakin’ sociopath.

So I invited my friends to the party I wanted to hear. Not a live record but an alive record. Because a lot of live records don’t sound live, just poorly recorded. And self-conscious musicians can’t let fly. I wanted to recreate the impact of a show. Unpretentious, with a muscular song body running through the room. This entailed seriously messing with both extremes of the sonic spectrum: the fundamentals (basics, rhythm section, roots) but also with the detail (percussion, high end, effects). These two strata asked to sound eccentric: atonal and arhythmic. So when the song body runs through the room, it’s not wholly unfamiliar, just dressed oddly enough to make you look twice.

Dark sunshine, still cool. Hopefully, anyway. My friends helped me make a nice party noise, a goofy sociopath. Everyone who stopped by the studio was asked to make some noise and they pretty much did. A party that lasted for a few years, it’s only now dying down. A friend called this morning asking when the bus was leaving. A rickety, squealy, squeaky bus…none of us want to miss it.”

w/ Chris Margolin

Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs, Bob Schneider has become one of the most celebrated musicians in the live music capital. Drawing from a range of diverse musicals styles, Schneider’s talent has defied genres.

Schneider will be releasing a new record ‘In A Roomful Of Blood with A Sleeping Tiger’ in August 2021 with supporting tour dates throughout the US.

Combining elements of funk, country, rock, and folk with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic, Schneider draws inspiration from the ’70s with a modern twist, reminiscent of contemporaries such as Beck. His catalogue is both uplifting and sober, unafraid to tackle powerful subjects like alienation, drug addiction, and lost romance in addition to celebrating life’s joys.

Schneider has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards including Best Album, Best Songwriter, Best Musician, and Best Male Vocals making him the most decorated artist in Austin music history.

However, Schneider’s fan base reaches far beyond the city limits of Austin. He started gaining national recognition when he released 2001’s Lonelyland, his major-label debut for Universal Records, followed by 2004’s I’m Good Now. Since leaving Universal, Schneider has gone on to release more award-winning albums under Vanguard and began releasing “side projects” on his label, Shockorama Records.

He has released more than a dozen albums, written over 1,000 songs, is a published author, and is also an avid painter and collage artist – and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

Hot off the heels off MAITA's 2020 debut, Best Wishes,  named one of the “50 Albums that Define Oregon” (Portland Monthly), MAITA’s sophomore LP, I Just Want To Be Wild For You, digs into the crippling oxymoron of modernity: the constant bombardment of communication paired with utter disconnection.

Released February 18th via venerable indie label Kill Rock Stars, I Just Want To Be Wild For You grasps passionately for a world that too often seems at a gauzy distance.

Of the new record, Bob Boilen (NPR music) says "She just has this sensitivity to her sound that I really really love."

KEXP calls MAITA, "a master storyteller who can turn intimate moments into quippy, catchy indie-rock songs.

Splitting time between her mom’s Japanese-speaking home and her father’s English-speaking home, songwriter Maria Maita-Keppeler found an expressive avenue out of her childhood shyness through music. The Portland-based songwriter tapped into that grand yet intimate reverence for MAITA’s sophomore album, from the churning twinkle of “Pastel Concrete” to the riotous give-and-take of “Honey, Have I Lost It All?”. In those moments of disconnect, of confusion, of isolation, I Just Want To Be Wild For You thunders ahead, forging unexpected connections along the way.

Named Portland’s "Best New Band by the Willamette Week,"  MAITA, has gone on to reach national acclaim, opening for the likes of Mirah, Blind Pilot, Horse Feathers, Typhoon, as well as completing a headlining national album release tour culminating in official showcases at Treefort and SXSW, where they were named one of the 101 Essential Acts (Austin Chronicle).

“A clear-eyed look at growing up and holding yourself responsible for actively creating the life you want to live instead of just waiting around for it to happen." — Cyrena Touros, NPR’s All Songs Considered

“I Just Want To Be Wild For You is emotional gold.”- BUST

"One of the most impressive and shining acts to come out of Portland in quite some time"- Portland Mercury

"The rarified class of artists with the ability to enthrall the listener right from the jump"-  Spin

w/ Babytooth & Sandy Pylos

Layperson

Julian Morris (b. 1989; Boston, MA) has been writing and recording as Layperson for 10 years. Culling inspiration from salt of the earth lyricists like Iris Dement and Townes Van Zandt, Julian’s music is earnest and true to his life experience. Julian transitioned in 2015, which permanently altered his singing voice. Re-learning the voice as a new instrument allowed him deeper access to expression. Julian moved to Portland, OR in 2008. He writes and records the majority of his music from home. Julian has released records with Portland based label Good Cheer and NY based Lobby Art.

Babytooth

Babytooth is the full band project of Portland, OR-based singer/songwriter Isabel Zacharias. Annie Fifer (Yellow Room) lends earworm guitar leads by turns distorted and crystal-clear, with Hugh Jepson (Soft Cheese) behind the drums and Benson Chong (Honeydiu, How Strange It Is) splitting time between bass & keyboards.

Fitting into and elaborating on the lineage of Pacific Northwest indie, the songs skate back & forth between noisy melodic rock & twinkly folk experiments, recalling the scrappy '90s/early-aughts rock of the region as much as the incisive lyrical focus of acts like Smog and Silver Jews.

A first EP, Thataway, arrived in 2020 via cassette-only label Bud Tapes — and its subsequent success helped establish the imprint as a go-to curator of the ever-evolving Portland DIY scene. With a debut full-length set for release in 2022 via like-minded tape label Antiquated Future, Zacharias continues to pen literate, intimate song portraits of distraction and awareness, aging and loss, comic relief, the everyday, and how memories inform identity.

Sandy Pylos

Sandy Pylos is Ana Diaz Sacco's musical project. Ana was raised in Asunción, Paraguay but relocated to Portland, OR in 2018. In 2022 she started collaborating with local musicians: Tony S., Ana Maria R., Kira S. and Wyatt S.  They played their first live shows together as a 5-piece band and have additional collaborators in the recordings.
The songs are influenced by boleros, power pop, left-field pop and low-rider oldies.

Sandy Pylos has two singles out, "La Modelo de Mis Fantasias" and "Cerca Mio" and is planning to release a few more singles and an EP in 2023.

Wild Pink

The fourth full-length from Wild Pink, ILYSM unfolds with all the fractured beauty of a dreamscape. Over the course of 12 chameleonic tracks, the New York-bred rock band build another world inhabited by ghosts and angels and aliens, inciting a strange and lovely daze as the backdrop shifts from the mundane (subdivisions, highways, hotel parking lots) to the extraordinary (deserts, battlefields, the moon). But within its vast imagination lies a potent truth-telling on the part of singer/guitarist John Ross, whose lyrics closely examine his recent struggle with cancer. The follow-up to 2021’s A Billion Little Lights—a critically acclaimed effort praised by the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, Vulture, and Stereogum, who named it “one of the prettiest rock records of the past decade”—ILYSM emerges as a truly revelatory body of work, transforming the most painful reflection into moments of transcendence.

As Ross reveals, ILYSM’s feverish yet fragile intensity has much to do with the unmooring experience of being diagnosed with cancer early in the writing process. Now in the surveillance phase of recovery, Ross explains, “Even though I’d already started working on the record, everything took on new meaning after my diagnosis. I started writing songs that tried to make sense of the whole experience, including the love and support I felt from the people in my life—particularly my wife, which is where the title came from.”

For Ross, the process of bringing ILYSM to life provided a certain sense of escape, even at its most daunting moments. (“I was actually back in another cancer surgery within a week of wrapping up the recording,” he recalls. “It was pretty surreal to record this album knowing I had cancer in my lymph nodes—but since I couldn't have the surgery any sooner, I just stuck with my studio time.”) And with the release of ILYSM, Wild Pink hope the album might supply others with their own outlet for solace and catharsis. “Writing about all this has helped me process my experience, or even just acknowledge that I still don’t completely understand how I feel about it,” says Ross. “It’s been a very confusing, overwhelming time, and hopefully it’ll offer some kind of comfort to anyone else who’s feeling overwhelmed or confused too.

Trace Mountains

Trace Mountains is the musical project of American indie rock musician Dave Benton. He has released 3 studio records since formally starting the band in 2018, A Partner to Lean OnLost in the Country and most recently, House of Confusion. Benton was formerly a member of the lo-fi band Lvl UP.

Nick Delffs grew up in Mendocino County, a lawless stretch of coastline that’s hard to get to and, for many, hard to escape. Nick did — emerging in the early aughts as the frontman for Portland band The Shaky Hands, whose sharp, jittery rock was anchored by Nick’s quavering vocals and questing lyrics. The Shaky Hands were mainstays of Portland on the verge of a major shift, and they rode that shift a while, signing to Kill Rock Stars and touring internationally with some of the bigger names in indie rock. But a hiatus in 2011 became indefinite and Nick Delffs was once again cast into the world: working as a sideman, releasing solo records, doing manual labor, going deeper into his spiritual practices, and, crucially, becoming a father.

Becoming a parent can affect different artists in different ways. Nick rode that change with surpassing grace and maturity. 2017’s Redesign, his first full-length under his own name, reflected the transition. In “Song for Aja”, Nick touched on other concerns familiar to those who follow his work: love of the natural world; longing for spiritual and physical connection; the desire to suffer with meaning and exult with abandon, to embrace somehow the world in its maddening contradictions and find the unity at the core.

Childhood Pastimes, his second release on Mama Bird Recording Co., is both more focused and, despite being technically an EP, more ambitious. It’s a four-song cycle — one song with many movements or four songs that bleed into one another, depending on how you hear it — that can be viewed either as a personal journey or an archetypal passage of a human being through four discrete stages: roughly, the movement from childhood innocence into adolescent adventure (The Escape); the sudden immersion into a life of discovery and excitement (The Dream); the first experience of romantic love, followed by the onset of heartbreak, dissolution, breakdown of self (The Affair); the emergence into a new way of thinking, a fresh perspective that encompasses all the suffering and joy into a balanced whole (The Outside).

Nick plays nearly all of the instruments here and the result is a unified aesthetic, born ultimately of his deep-seated love of rhythm: the thrum and throb of the acoustic guitars, the percussive melodic bang of the elegantly-crafted piano lines, and always, always the insistent, driving drums, propelling the record, and the listener, on this journey as the four tracks bleed into one another, one body, one blood, one beating heart. The concept of four songs that are really one suite of music requires a sure hand, and Nick’s never shakes: the way the songs blend together while retaining their distinctiveness — from the poppy exaltation of “The Escape” to the cold intensity, almost like an acoustic Kraftwerk, of “The Affair” — shows a songwriter and musician who has fully grown into his powers.

Those who have followed Nick’s career may see this as a culmination of years and years of honing and fine-tuning his bountiful gifts, and wonder with delight what might come next. For those who haven’t listened to Nick before, Childhood Pastimes is the perfect entry point, a distillation of what’s come before and the promise of a new beginning.

Suppose, just suppose, you could take a little of everything that's great about this country and distill it. The creativity, the ingenuity, the strength of the struggles of so many of its people -- indigenous, enslaved or otherwise. And then take that distilled energy and creativity and transform it to musical form. What would you say if I told you that it's being done?”
    – R-SON the Voice of Reason

Gangstagrass brings together two kinds of American music and creates a third, greater than the sum of the parts.

Developed as a studio project 15 years ago by Brooklyn-based producer Rench, Gangstagrass grew into a dynamic and spontaneous live band of Americans -- from Omaha Nebraska, Pensacola Florida, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Washington DC -- who have become close friends. Several work hard at other jobs (one teaches computer programming, another works at a comic book shop) to support their passion for making music, and four are dads, with kids ranging in age from baby through starting college.

Putting down roots and branching out across never-before-bridged genres, Gangstagrass has delighted crowds and has blown minds across the world, garnering a reputation among fans for dynamism and spontaneity. From SXSW to Grey Fox to the Americana Festival to music festivals abroad, these live performances explode the boundaries between genres generally thought to be incompatible. Howie Mandel described Gangstagrass as “the recipe that America has been looking for until now” and “what America needs right now!”

Taking full advantage of the improvisational aspects and virtues of both hip-hop and bluegrass, including frequent three-part harmonies, MCs Dolio the Sleuth and R-SON the Voice of Reason trade verses and freestyle alongside the unparalleled skills of fellow vocalists Dan Whitener on banjo, B.E. Farrow on fiddle, and Rench on guitar and beats.

This will be Gangstagrass's first Portland show since releasing the album No Time for Enemies, which quickly rose to #1 on the Billboard bluegrass charts. As an extra special treat at Mississippi Studios, Gangstagrass will also be bringing us their first-ever holiday EP! Expect a high-energy set full of irreverent and catchy originals and covers (Santa's Favorite, Kick It In, Jingle Bells, and more) celebrating a variety of holiday traditions in addition to plenty of Gangstagrass's biggest hits that will have you dancing all night. Join us for the party as the band continues to explore new sonic territory while showing how amazing the sound of America is when it all comes together.

Mbrascatu

Mbrascatu is a cross-pollination of numerous influences, including  spaghetti Westerns, immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe, psych rock, folk, to create a unique blend of sounds. Along with bands like Calexico , Devotchka and  Gogol Bordello, they infused modern indie music with a global flavor. Mbrascatu was formed in 2010  in Portland, OR by singer-songwriter and guitar player Andrea Algieri. They recorded their debut album, Mbrascatu (self titled) in 2012, followed by Tempo 2014, Elementi 2016, Tutto Cambia  2021

Sama Dams

Few bands command the unexpectedly fine line that divides tension and release like Sama Dams does. And it's no wonder: songwriters Sam and Lisa Adams have been playing music together for over a decade - as long as they have been married - developing a creative forthrightness that sometimes feels voyeuristic. Taking cues from jazz, R&B, new wave, indie-rock, and classical art song, the alt-rock trio weaves a sensuous musical fabric that is distinctly theirs.

Much like the Dirty Projectors or Thom Yorke, Sama Dams's high art sensibilities are wrapped around a subversive knotty core of uncompromised radicalism - like if Leonard Bernstein was signed to K Records. In that way, the DIY ethos of the Pacific Northwest has shaped much of the band's path forward since graduating music school in 2008 and relocating to Portland in 2012.

Sama Dams’s third and most recent full-length album, ‘Say It’, surprises you with its gritty yet precise instrumentation, striking a keen balance between reserve and power, from wiley "Neil-Young-riding-a-rocket-sled" electric guitar riffs and mutant waves of organ to distorted ukulele and cut-up-on-the-spot breakbeats. The Portland Mercury said “‘Say It’ is an endlessly fascinating sonic concoction, and a confident step forward for Sama Dams”. What should be a series of stylistic contradictions results in each song firmly standing its ground as an interwoven compositional masterpiece, bending and twisting with eclectic abandon.

The band's sprawling sonic footprint is held together by their dynamic vocal power - an alternate-reality vocal pairing of Kate Bush and Jeff Buckley. Sam and Lisa's combined proficiencies and unique approaches to songwriting merge with the brilliant percussive work of drummer Micah Hummel, creating a matchless sound in live settings as well as in the studio.

Sama Dams can regularly be found gracing stages, music festivals, and living rooms across the United States and Central Europe, their music finding a place in the hearts of both music enthusiasts and general audiences alike with their intelligent arrangements, catchy melodies, and playful musicality.

Halley Greg

Halley Greg is a 31-year-old singer-songwriter who blasted into the Seattle music scene in 2019 and has since quickly picked up steam and gained a devoted following.  Formerly a high school science teacher, she discovered her love for songwriting at the age of 28 and then went from playing her first open mic to forming a band, recording a full studio album, and selling out her first headlining show in a mere nine months.  In 2020, just before the pandemic hit, Greg decided to resign from teaching to focus on music.  When the descent into COVID-19 lockdown threw a wrench in those plans, she submitted an audition video for Season 20 of NBC’s The Voice, and ended up landing first a blind audition, and then a spot on Team Kelly. Decidedly lyric-driven and intentionally sassy, Greg's first album, titled American Harlot, paints a picture of feminist empowerment, exploring non-traditional relationship narratives and poking repeatedly at the patriarchal and puritanical roots of American society.  She has been called "the love child of Katy Perry and Joan Jett," with a pure, crooning voice that juxtaposes entrancingly with her edgy, bluesy rock 'n roll music. Her recently-released second album, Straitjacket, is an exploration of the societal tensions and vulnerability we experienced collectively throughout the pandemic.

Blair Borax

Blair Borax is a singer-songwriter, somewhere in between Fiest, Regina Spektor, and Adrienne Lenker, who writes lyrically-driven folk-pop songs to process big feelings, make sense of the strange and beautiful human experience, and keep moving forward. With vocal stylings reminiscent of 1920s jazz, songwriting that is unafraid to tackle the taboo, and pop melodies that stay with you for days, a Blair Borax performance will bring you into feeling the full range of your emotions and leave you feeling less alone.

After releasing her first EP ‘everything is light work’ in May of 2021, Blair released her debut full-length album “Keep Walking” in June 2022.  “Keep Walking” will take you on an emotional journey through heartbreak, fear, grief, anger, sadness, and eventually, a sliver of hope. This album is her most honest, personal, and powerful yet. “Keep Walking” is about moving forward, with her head held high, in the face of challenges and it is the perfect companion to help you keep walking too.

“With rich lyrics and a voice like molasses, Blair Borax makes music that moves you to the heart of being human, offers you a warm cup of tea, and invites you to stay a while.” - Juniper Klatt

OFF!’s first new album in eight years translates the work of an alien race attempting to rebuild the remains of your destroyed record collection.  Free LSD hits reset like The Beatles conjuring Revolver, The Walker Brothers Nite Flights refusal to be a reunion record, or that album by Baby Huey where every influence merges so effortlessly that it is simply one sound unified.  Like the first 3 records, the raging two-minute bonfires that make up Free LSD were written by the core of the band, Keith Morris & Dimitri Coats.

The album introduces new members, drummer Justin Brown (Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Herbie Hancock) and bassist Autry Fulbright II (...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead), who push the idea of punk into another dimension.  Coats blankets a number of these tracks with layers of electronics and Morris sounds timeless.

OFF! have never sounded better.  BETTER.  Sure, there are some Black Flag/Circle Jerks Morris ghosts in here, Burning Brides riffs, Thundercat calisthenics, and Trail of Dead burns, but that is just the skin of the thing.  “War Above Los Angeles” is the cornerstone of the record, carrying all of the scars of where the band was before, along with otherworldly interplay by a group with phasers now set for stun.  That is not to say the no nonsense 90 second furnace blasts aren’t in full effect on tracks like “Kill To Be Heard,” but as one of the architects of punk rock, singer Keith Morris says, "After making music for as long as I have, it was time to use a palette that includes lime green, turquoise, and magenta instead of the typical colors and shades that were involved in all of the other break neck and car chase scenarios.  Miles Davis with Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters as opposed to Milo Goes to College."

The band is working on a film to accompany the record.  Coats explains, “Since thinking of the album as a soundtrack to a weird sci-fi movie gave us permission to experiment, and the film explains, in a fantastical way, the creation of the album, they both go hand in hand as an overall art project.”  Free LSD is a build of subterranean howl that lifts off into the cosmos of Sun Ra and labelmates, The Stooges. OFF! is supercharged for takeoff in what has now been confirmed as humanity’s new year zero.

MARGO CILKER
is a woman who drinks deeply of life, and her debut record Pohorylle, released in November 2021 on Portland label Fluff and Gravy, is brimming with it. For the last seven years, the Eastern Oregon songwriter, who NPR calls one of “11 Oregon Artists to Watch in 2021,” has split her time between the road and various outposts across the world, from Enterprise, OR to the Basque Country of Spain, forging a path that is at once deeply rooted and ever-changing.

As Pohorylle traverses through the geography of Cilker’s memories—a touring musician’s tapestry of dive bars and breathtaking natural beauty—love is apparent, as is its inevitable partner: loss. For what bigger heartbreak is there than to be a fervent lover who must always keep moving? Cilker seems keenly aware of the precarious footing upon which love stands, and at many turns, the record circles something that is staggeringly beautiful and slipping away.

“I am a woman split between places,” Cilker sings on the album’s wistful closer, touching for a brief moment upon the vast dichotomies of her selfhood and her profession, and the negotiation that she conducts between them.

“I'm just very inquisitive. I’m a very curious person. Why are things this way? Do they have to stay this way? You know, how can things change?” Cilker asks. It is this part of her nature that expands Pohorylle into the complex journey that it is: her ability to crack open a moment of desperation and lay it out on a table to catch a careful light.

Pohorylle, which carries gentle nods to Lucinda Williams, Townes Van Zandt, and Gillian Welch, shines under the instincts of producer Sera Cahoone, whom Cilker first came across in 2019 while planning her first full-length. “I was trying to pin down what kind of sound I wanted and stumbled across a video of Sera and just loved how she performed. I then listened to her last studio record and thought, that's the sound.” Cilker says. “I found out Sera had produced that record herself with John Askew. My friend put me in touch with her and she liked my demos enough to produce the album. It felt very auspicious—It was truly just a gut feeling.”

Cahoone quickly got to work assembling a first-rate band: Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists) on keys, Jason Kardong (Sera Cahoone, Son Volt) on pedal steel, Rebecca Young (Lindsey Fuller, Jesse Sykes) on bass, Mirabai Peart (Joanna Newsom) on strings, Kelly Pratt (Beirut) on horns, and the album’s engineer John Morgan Askew (Neko Case, Laura Gibson) on an array of other instruments. The record also prominently features effortless harmonies from Sarah Cilker, Margo Cilker’s sister and frequent touring partner.

Over the last six years, Margo Cilker has toured extensively across the US and internationally, and is a staple in the independent festival circuit.

Dakota Theim

Piano lessons at a young age can go either way. Some kids hide under the table or refuse to practice while others master the instrument as the foundation of their bag of tricks. Dakota Theim started taking piano lessons at age 7, before later teaching himself guitar after a stretch of enjoying the popular video game Guitar Hero. With piano and guitar in the bag, Theim went on to teach himself bass and drums. When he wasn’t playing or practicing, he was listening. Artists in the collection of his parents who had stood the test of time held his interest, those with strong, catchy melodies and classic pop sensibilities. These elements would become the crux of Theim’s approach as a songwriter.

Leveling up as a multi-instrumentalist came in handy for the recording of the songs on Tangled Heart. Theim played and recorded everything on early demos for Tangled Heart himself before sharing the recordings with his bandmates, guitarist Ben Bilotti and bassist Alex Werner, and soliciting input. Bilotti and Werner have been playing with Theim since the spring of 2019 and have been friends with him for longer than that. Bilotti and Theim met interning as studio assistants at the recording studio Hallowed Halls in Portland, while Theim met Werner in the halls of Portland State University and later the University of Oregon. Werner and Bilotti’s appreciation for and understanding of Theim’s songwriting means their additions or influences on the songs make sense. Inviting Werner and Bilotti to “do their thing” is a natural evolution of the strong friendships the trio share. Werner’s loping bass and Billotti’s shimmering, jangly guitars shine among Theim’s arrangements, underpinned by Theim’s bouncy melodies and bright, inviting voice.

With an open calendar during the early stages of the Covid-19 shut down, Theim approached his songwriting process initially without the intention of recording an album at all and without a sense of pressure to follow up his debut album Somewhere Under The Sun. This was an opportunity to experiment with songs that people might not even hear. Now they will.

Tangled Heart was recorded in Theim's home studio, and at the Billotti family home, mixed in Los Angeles by Daniel McNeill and mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk.

The Apricots

The Apricots are an emerging Portland project serving their own sweet, glossy sounds that are hard to pin down. Their music is influenced from all directions, from indie rock to alternative funk while finding their center in sweet-like-honey harmonies. Topped off with driving percussion and melodic bass, The Apricots want you swoon one minute and groove the next.

Searows

Searows is the indie/folk project of Alec Duckart (he/him), a Pacific Northwest singer-songwriter and guitarist.

MAE.SUN

MAE.SUN, alternately known as Hailey Niswanger, is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer. In 2016, Hailey started branching out from her jazz roots, and through meditation, began to channel music that was inspired by a multitude of influences and sounds. “My music started to come from a place that felt so much more than just ‘me’. I wanted to depart from my birth given name, and put music out under a new moniker. MAE is my middle name, and SUN, was chosen from inspiring words by Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, who said, “The sun is our second heart…[the] great heart outside of our body.” Essentially, our universal, collective heart. MAE.SUN’s music is mindful and eclectic, pushing boundaries and defying genres. Her music taps into the collective consciousness, serving as an engaging mediation for all. Though she can be primarily heard playing her saxophones, flute, and singing, MAE.SUN also plays clarinet, piano, and guitar. MAE.SUN’s cosmic debut album ‘Vol. 1: Inter-be’ was released in 2017, followed by ‘Vol. 2: Into The Flow’ in 2019. Vol. 3 is set to be released in 2023.

Before 2016, Hailey recorded 3 albums under her original name, and received many accolades in the jazz community; including winning first place at the Mary Lou Williams saxophone competition at age 19, charting on Billboard, plaudits from esteemed writer Nat Hentoff in the Wall Street Journal, rave reviews in JazzTimes, Jazziz, NPR, and DownBeat, including being listed on their critics poll for rising star on alto and soprano saxophone for the 9 consecutive years. She has toured and performed with a number of notable artists including, Esperanza Spalding, Kenny Barron, Harvey Mason, Wolff & Clark Expedition, Mulatu Astatke, Ralph Peterson, and Terri Lyne Carrington whose GRAMMY award winning album ‘The Mosaic Project’ she recorded flute on. In the pop realm, she has performed with Demi Lovato, Sleigh Bells, and can be heard playing flute on Beyoncé’s ‘Black Parade’. Most recently Hailey has been touring with pop/folk artist Clairo.

Portland, Oregon’s Graham Jonson started building his musical universe early: playing piano as a toddler, finding the music of J Dilla in fifth grade, and self-releasing singles by age 16. First appearing under the name quickly, quickly in 2017, his project’s profile has since grown fervently with fans in the ‘chill beats’-oriented corners of SoundCloud, YouTube, and Reddit. Showcased on the self-released quickly, quickly vol. 1 and developed further with 2018’s Paths (Radio Juicy) and Over Skies (Jakarta Records), his style as an electronic producer is smooth and hypnotic, fusing elements of jazz, hip hop, and R&B. Reference points range from the Stones Throw catalog to Bobby Hutcherson’s cosmic freeform to Lô Borges’ Brazilian bops. Jonson signed to Ghostly International in 2021, reinventing the project as a full-fledged songwriter, vocalist, and arranger, playing nearly everything from drums to keys and guitar, and of course electronics.
