w/ Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters

Big Richard

What began as an all-female festival collab quickly morphed into a serious passion project driven by sisterhood, harmony and humor...…along with the shared desire to rage fiddle tunes and smash the patriarchy.

Big Richard is a neo-acoustic super group made up of four well established Colorado musicians: Bonnie Sims on mandolin (Bonnie & Taylor Sims/Everybody Loves An Outlaw/Bonnie & the Clydes), Joy Adams on cello (Nathaniel Rateliff/Darol Anger/Half Pelican), Emma Rose on bass + guitar (Sound of Honey/Daniel Rodriguez/Whippoorwill) and Eve Panning on fiddle (Lonesome Days).

Formed in late 2021, the band gained immediate notoriety for their charismatic stage presence and their vocal/instrumental prowess.  After selling out all of their club shows Big Richard quickly started confirming festival appearances across America.  2023 is sure to be a big year!!

Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters

Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ new album, Live from the Blue Moon, spotlights them in an ideal setting, sharing their freewheeling sound with an audience of admirers and indulging in the upbeat approach that’s characterized their cheery tunes since early on. Part bluegrass, part Americana and wholly down-home, they run through a set of songs made up of originals and a select collection of covers, including a cheery takes on the age-old country country classic “Tiger by the Tail” and Tom Petty’s aptly chosen “American Girl.” Not surprisingly then, there’s wit and whimsy at every turn. The Riveters, Flynn’s all-female band, take their name from Rosie and the Riveters, that group of women who assembled weapons of war in World War II, and indeed, this musical ensemble proves as adept as their forebears in crafting the tools of their trade. One need only listen to songs such as “Shrouded Sun,” “How the West Was Won” and “Deep River Hollow” to get a true sense of their ability and agility. Both upbeat and effusive, these talented ladies bring the house down while elevating the enthusiasm of all in attendance. That effusive feeling comes across throughout and, in turn, offers further cause for sheer celebration.

Ondara’s new album,Spanish Villager No: 3, was predominately produced by Ondara and Mike Viola(Jenny Lewis, Dan Wilson) with contributions fromTaylor Goldsmith and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes, Sebastian Steinberg, Tim Kuhland Jeremy Stacey. The new collection of songs features a much more full, electric sound.Of the album, Ondara states, “This collection of work and the work that lies ahead in presenting it to the world, is a metaphor for my spiritual path. There is death and resurrection in it, a peeling of layers, a pursuit of the truest form of the self in the universe. Ironically, the adaptation of the Spanish Villager character has made me more acquainted with myself. By creating an obvious demarcation between theart and the artist,I have charted two paths of maturation. One path is the maturation of the SpanishVillager as a work of art, as a character in a narrative, as a commodity partaking in the mandatory sport of capitalism; The other is my own personal maturation into a spiritual, integrated, and useful member of society.”The namesake behind the new album isThe Spanish Villager: a mysterious man with a potent message who has proven to be a versatile guy: he’s the subject of a short story Ondara wrote and turned into a graphic novel, and now a new album.Spanish Villager No: 3follows his 2020 sophomore album,Folk N’ Roll Vol 1: Tales of Isolation, and his2019 debut album,Tales of America, which received a nomination forBest Americana Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards. Ondara also received a nod for Best Emerging Act at the2019 Americana Awards. Ondara grew up in Nairobi, Kenya listening to American alt-rock and making up his own songs for as long as he can remember. At an early age he fell in love with the music of BobDylan and was granted a visa through the immigration lottery system. He chose Minneapolis as his home to pursue a career as a singer and songwriter with Dylan in mind. He began making his way in the local music scene, continually writing songs about what he saw, felt and experienced in a place far different from home.

W/ Jade Jackson

On his new album See You Next Time, Texas-bred singer/songwriter Joshua Ray Walker shares an imagined yet truthful portrait of a brokedown honky-tonk and themisfits who call it home: barflies and wannabe cowboys, bleary-eyed dreamers and hopelessly lost souls. His third full-length in three years, the album marks the final installment in a trilogy that originated with Walker’s globally acclaimed 2019 debut Wish You Were Here and its equally lauded follow-up Glad You Made It (the #5 entry on Rolling Stone’s Best Country and Americana Albums of 2020 list).

“The whole idea with the trilogy was to use the honky-tonk as a setting where all these different characters could interact with each other,” says Walker, who drew immense inspiration from the local dive bars he first started sneaking into and gigging at as a teenager growing up in East Dallas. “In my mind, this album’s taking place on the night before the bar closes forever—the songs are just me taking snapshots of that world, and all the moments that happen in it.”

Like its predecessors, See You Next Time came to life at Audio Dallas Recording Studio with producer John Pedigo and a first-rate lineup of musicians, including the likes of pedal-steel player Adam “Ditch” Kurtz and rhythm guitarist Nathan Mongol Wells of Ottoman Turks(the country-punk outfit for which Walker sidelines as lead guitarist). The album’s immaculately crafted but timelessly vital sound provides a prime backdrop for Walker’s storytelling, an element that endlessly blurs the lines between fable-like fiction and personal
revelation. “I learned a long time ago that writing from a character’s perspective lets me examine things about myself without ever feeling too self-conscious aboutit,” he points out. Closely informed by the tremendous loss he’s suffered in recent years, See You Next Time emerges as the most powerful work to date from an extraordinarily gifted songwriter, imbued with equal parts weary pragmatism and the kind of unabashedly romantic spirit that defies all cynicism.

On the album-opening “Dallas Lights,” Walker presents a potent introduction to the vast and sometimes-harrowing emotional terrain of See You Next Time. “I used to hang out in Lower Greenville, which is a neighborhood in Dallas with a lot of homeless people,” he says of the song’s origins. “One of the guys there knew someone who’d passed away and there was nobody to claim the body: no wife, no family, no kinfolk at all. I was really struck by how terrible that was, and over the years it became a song about hometown pride, and wanting to die where you lived.” Anchored by the heartrending fiddle work of Heather Stalling, “Dallas Lights” ultimately lends a bit of glory to that tragedy, its chorus lyrics unfolding as their own resolute prayer (“Lord, don’t bury me deep/Under the sycamore tree/Burn Me/Spread Me/Where the city
can be seen”).

W/ Jeremy McComb

For the past 20 years, Jason Boland & the Stragglers have dazzled audiences all over as one of the leading ambassadors of the Oklahoma and Texas music movement. Millions of fans cheering him on, over 500,000 records sold independently and 10 albums later, Boland is a career musician whose legacy continues to grow. From his early days touring in cramped vans and playing in front of tiny bar crowds to the packed venues he performs in today, Boland’s uncompromising approach has grown his profile dramatically, especially in the past handful of years. Add to that the legions of musicians who are influenced by Boland, and his impact on the scene is undeniable.

But just like so many other musicians, Boland was initially paralyzed by the pandemic. At the onset of the March 2020 lockdown, Boland was stuck at home for the longest period of his storied career without performing live.

Earlier this year, Boland released a cover of both Steve Winwood’s “Back In The High Life Again” and Bob Dylan’s “The Times They-Are-A-Changin’” with the proceeds going to charity. Radio programmers around the country began spinning Back in the High Life Again, and the song spent 11 weeks in the Top 40 Americana Singles Chart.

Prior to the pandemic, Boland was hard at work on his most ambitious project yet. The groundwork he laid in 2019 saw the singer-songwriter roll through songs that would be a bold step forward. Strumming through the material with the Stragglers at a rehearsal in Colorado, Boland knew he had something big. However, that session took place a day before the lockdown and put the kibosh on the project for a year.

The third full-length from Olivia Jean, Raving Ghost is an album populated by mysterious characters in various states of danger: cursed lovers, doomed souls, women deliriously haunted by unseen forces. Over the course of its 11 spellbinding tracks, the Detroit-born singer/songwriter/multi- instrumentalist amplifies that drama with her wildly melodic take on garage-rock, handling each riff with the power and precision she’s previously shown as a member of the Black Belles (and as an in- demand session/ touring musician who’s played with legends like Wanda Jackson). A stunning evolution of the retro-surf sound of her past solo work, Raving Ghost ultimately makes for the most magnificently heavy and mesmerizing output yet from an endlessly fascinating artist.

Mainly recorded at the famed Valentine Recording Studios in L.A., Raving Ghost finds Olivia Jean back in the producer’s chair and working with musicians like My Morning Jacket keyboardist Bo Koster and drummers Carla Azar (T-Bone Burnett, Nikki Lane) and Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs, The Afghan Whigs). “Valentine is like a time capsule that’s been perfectly preserved since the ’60s, so aesthetically and sonically it was right up my alley,” says Olivia Jean, who recorded parts of Raving Ghost at Third Man Recording Studio in her homebase of Nashville. “We had so much at our disposal and experimented with different amps and sounds, and the songs slowly transformed into something I never imagined. On my previous albums I played most of the instruments myself, so it felt good to let go and trust the process of working with these extremely creative musicians.” Engineered by Bill Skibbe (The Kills, Blonde Redhead), the result is a feverish collision of goth- punk and power-pop and classic garage, charged with an energy so intense that the speakers to several of Valentine’s vintage amps ended up blowing out during the recording sessions.

With her past touring experience including opening for B-52s co- founder Cindy Wilson, Olivia Jean constructed Raving Ghost’s formidable sound with her captivating live show in mind. And as she gears up for her next tour (and for appearances at major festivals like Shaky Knees), her number-one intention is to infuse each performance with the unparalleled thrill she finds in creating music. "Ever since I was a kid, writing songs and playing guitar has been an addiction that nothing else can touch,” she says. “My guitar is an appendage. I could never put my guitar down even if I tried.”

Parker Millsap

Parker Millsap quickly made a name for himself with his captivating live performances, soulful sound, and character-driven narratives. He’s had a string of successes including an appearance on CONAN, a performance with Elton John at the Apple Music Festival, an Austin City Limits taping & an Americana Music Association nomination for Album of the Year. He's shared the stage with folks like Jason Isbell, Shovels & Rope, Patty Griffin, Houndmouth, and many others.

Parker’s early releases showcased a mastery of acoustic folk rock, with their flourish for revelation and fiery dynamics. Be Here Instead, Millsap’s 2021 release produced by John Agnello, hinted at the wildness to come while exploring newer, more personal songwriting styles. Parker's newest album, Wilderness Within You, is a natural step in Parker's evolution which interweaves threads of his musical past and newer influences to gorgeous effect.

Alexa Rose

On her new album ‘Headwaters’…

Headwaters are the source of a river. The furthest point from where water merges with something else. They are not mighty. Just a network of small tributaries, like a creek, not necessarily picturesque, but they’re the most important part of the river. Water is fluid and inconsistent and sacred and indifferent. You can be miles down a river, but you’re still at the origin. And in that way, water feels like it has transcended time. That’s how these songs found me—the way memories find you, in that slivering, elusive water. As quickly as you come across them, you bend in another direction.

Headwaters is the sophomore album from Virginian indie folk singer Alexa Rose. A series of minutely-observed vignettes that feel intimate and expansive at the same time. It captures the sweetness of life without avoiding any of the pain, with songs about time and its constraints, peppered with precise details pulled from Rose’s own life that make universal themes seem personal, inviting the listener to make each song their own.

On Laith’s debut record, ‘Lightning’, he carries us across state lines from LA to Arizona, Colorado to Espanola, Houston to New Orleans, Utah on to the Great Northwest, where he currently lays his head, dreaming of running these roads until the wheels don’t touch the ground. And his writing does just that. It burns along the asphalt until there’s none left. And that’s when Laith takes us beyond, on phantom track lines through the abstract geography of his mind. He flows seamlessly between railway signs and lost trains of thought. Like a true American surrealist.

‘Lightning’ was recorded in two pieces over about 6 months in Portland, Oregon. Laith worked closely with Kevin Christopher, who engineered and mixed using three different studio spaces to create something loose and alive, but also deeply focused and highly intricate. The bulk of the album was made at Ruby Machine, a studio Kevin helped build, and the remainder was done at Trash Treasury and Heavy Meadow Sound.

The first sessions began with a highly experimental approach, in which Laith would write the song in the studio while recording. These sessions included Casey Klep Matson, Kevin Christopher, and Cooper Trail. This collaboration became the basis for Laith’s current backing band - The Texas Birds.

The later sessions began with finished material arranged song-by-song utilizing the aforementioned trio, as well as, a loose circle of wildly talented neighbors - Merle Law, Erik Clampitt, Jeff Munger, Carolina Chauff, Sam Wenc, and Anna Jeter.

The result is a 12-track traveling companion for the wild-eyed western mystic drifting along the winding highway, pulling off for all the old haunts - love, money, and hysteria. It’s outsider country rooted in the Texas songwriting tradition; buzzing with the subtle hum of northwestern psychedelia. And with a voice that literally sounds like smokestacks and lightning, Laith takes the listener from bar room to bedroom and back again, cruising along the vibrant soundscapes of The Texas Birds. It’s a timeless sound laden with thundering pianos and padded with Rhodes and organ; dusty acoustic guitars and ghostly harmonies fade in and out of the ether; the spirited twang of the electric guitar and the raw wah thump of the clavinet squabble in the dark while the pedal steel takes to the sky; all held within the deep pocket of a dynamic rhythm section.

This album is alive with hunger and humility, madness and mourning, love and loss, and the eternal coming-and-going of all things. A map dotted with lightning strikes. Marked with these moments of crystalized awakening and reflection. The songs carry you through a gentle landscape punctuated by this raw phenomena. A little bit lucky. A little bit lethal. Like mainlining magic with the voice of God. And, then moving on…

The Minus 5

THE MINUS 5 is yet another band featuring Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck, where a three-decade collaboration started.  The friends have shared vans (with occasional bus) with R.E.M., Tuatara, Baseball Project, Filthy Friends, Tired Pony, CeDell Davis, Robyn Hitchcock/Venus 3, No Ones (and no doubt a few others).  But The Minus 5, with its floating (and frankly ridiculous) membership, remains the core of what they do, which is whatever they want, most of the time.  Over the course of at least 13 (?) albums, 30+ singles/compilations, and countless live line-up fluctuations, the band-that-wasn’t-meant-to-be-a-band has toured with both Wilco and Tweedy, and appeared on Conan O’Brien and The Late Show/David Letterman.

Their newest release will be Calling Cortez (Neil Vol. 3), a continuation of tributes to the greatest, Neil Young, starting with 2020’s Scott The Hoople NEIL (Vol. 1).  One would assume that there will be a Vol. 2 as well.  On the new record, Neil songs share equal space with songs written by Scott McCaughey, but inspired by Mr. Young.  The album features contributions from Minus 5 favorites like Kurt Bloch, Joe Adragna, Mike McCready, Linda Pitmon Wynn, Debbi Peterson, Jenny Conlee-Drizos, Jeff & Spencer Tweedy, Casey Neill, Jim Talstra, and Pauly Pulvirenti.

The No Ones

The No Ones are set to release My Best Evil Friend, their first full-length collection since 2020, slated for March 31 on Yep Roc Records. Available in digital, CD and LP formats, the First Edition double-LP features six exclusive tracks.

Paying tribute to the artists that inspire them and populate their turntables, My Best Evil Friend channels Nick Lowe, Pamela Polland, Marvin Gaye, Jenny Lewis, Jesse Ed Davis, ? & The Mysterians, Plastic Ono Band, and Phil Ochs, among others.

Today, the group shares the second single “Song for George,” a reflective, mid-tempo tune that pays homage to George Harrison and features Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) on backing vocals and Peter Buck on electric sitar. Of the track, Scott McCaughey offers, “I was sitting in the Dungeon on Feb. 25, 2021, when L'Angelo Misterioso dropped by and presented me with this tune, words, recording. Very considerate of him, and I'll always cherish our time together. Ben Gibbard as Greek chorus.”

With a lineup that stretches from Norway through Athens, Georgia, to the Northwest corner of the U.S., The No Ones are comprised of Scott McCaughey (lead and backing vocals, bass, keyboards, guitars), Peter Buck (12-string, guitars, electric sitar, bass), Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen (drums, percussion, keyboards, backing vocals), and Frode Strømstad (lead and backing vocals, guitars).

For the album, the group enlisted backing vocals contributions from friends Debbi Peterson (The Bangles), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), and Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven) on bass, and strings from Marin Stallemo Bakke.

My Best Evil Friend was recorded by Bård Ingebrigtsen at Amper Tone Studios in Oslo, Norway, Scott McCaughey at Dungeon of Horror in Portland, OR, Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen at Nygrenda Kev & Dur in Grimstad, Norway, and Erik Bekkeheien in Egersund, Norway.

w/ Greg Uhlmann

There is a moment halfway through Hand Habits’ Fun House at which musician Meg Duffy asks the question, “How many times must I rewind the tape?” It’s a fitting question planted squarely in the middle of a sonically adventurous record concerned largely with making sense and taking stock. How much time must we spend examining our own past in order to fully understand it? How can we safely acknowledge pain in order to release it and fully actualize who we are supposed to be? Buffeted by strings, synths, and a gently-shook tambourine, the aptly-titled track, “The Answer,” highlights the emotional engine at the heart of the record. “I know t…  Duffy sings, “Here’s what I hope to find – it’s always mine.”

Fun House is Duffy’s most ambitious Hand Habits album to date. Produced by Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) and engineered by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), the record was not intended as a reaction to the pandemic, but it was very much the result of taking a difficult, if much-needed, moment of pause. “When the pandemic happened, everything stopped,” recalls Duffy. “I had been touring consistently for five years, both on my own and playing in other people’s bands, so I wasn’t really writing a lot in between. It had been full pedal to the metal in terms of traveling and scheduling, which meant I really didn’t have a lot of time to think about how I felt or really check in with myself. Then, when the world basically stopped, it turned out to be the longest I’ve been alone in my entire life – without being in a relationship, without being on the road, without working myself to exhaustion – and the result was really like, holy shit. I slammed on the brakes and everything psychologically that I’d been pushing down and ignoring for the past few years suddenly flew to the foreground.”

What started out as a very personal reckoning eventually blossomed into a fruitful and convenient means of making new music. Grounded in LA and sharing a house with Ashworth and Thomas, who also runs a studio space in the building, Duffy began to flesh out the songs that would eventually become Fun House. Emboldened by going into therapy and coaxed by Ashworth to push the songs into unexpected new shapes, the resulting music was more acutely personal and stylistically adventurous than anything they had attempted before. The new songs also became a prism through which Duffy could begin to self-actualize in a new way.

In the end, the eleven tracks on Fun House represent the turning of a corner, a means of processing grief, trauma, and recovery while coming to a deeper understanding of one’s own history and what it means to step into your own power. It’s also, as Duffy imagines it, a testament to the power of creative community.

Sessa, the São Paulo musician known for his enchanting 2019 debut album ‘Grandeza,’ returns with an expansive collection of songs built with reverence for the deep historical traditions of Brazilian music, now adorned with elegant strings, cascades of hypnotic rhythm, draped with his graceful backing choir. Whereas ‘Grandeza’ was about the softness of the human body, and the drunkenness of being in love, ‘Estrela Acesa’ is about love’s fragility and the hangover of it all.

Recorded between June and September 2021 in Ilhabela and Piracaia, Brazil, and New York City, its twelve songs of are inspired by the majesty of being a witness to and an agent of life. ‘Estrela Acesa’ (or Burning Star) is music about music, and for that it is drenched in the melancholy and mystery of night. From the opening notes of “Gostar do Mundo,” the album is lavished with intoxicating melodies and vivid textures, yet grounded with a sense of spiritual humility. While Sessa’s poetry is sensual near to a level of provocation, there is an inward stillness – a quiet acknowledgment of beauty and pain that would be powerless if not for the language of music. In balletic fashion, ‘Estrela Acesa’ meditates deeply on the intersection of the sublime and the sinister, constantly at play.

“My ears or my soul are stained with this faded, ghostly, empty, and broken sound,” says Sessa. ‘Estrela Acesa’ is the sound of Rogério Duprat’s famous Tropicália records, and the legendary arranger Arthur Verocai – Brazilian in feel, with hints of Erasmos Carlos and João Donato, yet tinged with the roots reggae rhythm of Johnny Clarke. The nuanced interplay between Sessa, bassist Marcelo Cabral, percussionist co-producer Biel Basile, and the galaxial orchestration of Alex Chumak and Simon Hanes, created an album that feels bare yet opulent, the spare songs gradually blossoming into lush, fertile landscapes. Inspired by the vivid timbres and textures of spiritual seekers like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and Yusef Lateef, hints of that liberated jazz sound first emerged on ‘Grandeza.’ By contrast, on ‘Estrela Acesa,’ the stunning orchestrations offer smooth transport and gentle transcendence.

Rob Leines
"It's hard for me to sit still," admits Rob Leines, the country-rock frontman and blue-collar road warrior who regularly spends more than 200 nights a year onstage, bashing out a mix of Telecaster twang, guitar-driven grit, and southern storytelling.

Long before he paid tribute to the touring lifestyle with albums like 2021's Blood Sweat and Beers, Leines crisscrossed the country as a child. The son of a military man, he was born in Georgia and spent time in both Utah and California before returning to the motherland, where he graduated high school and began working as a whitewater raft guide. Leines loved the South — its waterways, mountains, and great outdoors — and although he'd eventually move back to California, those southern roots would always play a role in his music.

Following his 2018 debut, Bad Seed, and the 2020 concert album Live in Richmond at the National (recorded during a rowdy night in Virginia, opening for Whiskey Myers), Blood Sweat and Beers finds Leines occupying the intersection between outlaw country and southern rock. It's a record that mixes tattooed twang, hardscrabble honky tonk, Appalachian rock & roll, and roadhouse roots music into the same pot, filled with songs that spotlight the highs, lows, victories, vices, and vixens that come with a life spent on the move.

Summer Dean
Texas based recording artist Summer Dean is as authentic as they come. The acclaimed singer-songwriter owns the stage from the moment she struts into the spotlight, captivating audiences across the country with her sly wit, Southern charm and soulful songcraft.  Night after night, her down-home dynamism illustrates exactly why she’s a highly sought after artist and opener for the likes of Marty Stuart, Asleep at the Wheel, Colter Wall, Charley Crockett and Mike and the Moonpies.

The seventh generation Texan’s roots run deep and proud — not only in the Lone Star soil, but also in the grand tradition of the state’s sonic storytellers, timeless talents like Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keen or Kris Kristofferson. Dean grew up listening to the greats on her family’s ranch, and she now easily takes her place alongside them. Look no further than her superb sophomore album, Bad Romantic, which showcases her ability to spin yarns both amusing and affecting. The record, cut to tape at Fort Worth’s storied Niles City Sound, includes her collaborations with Colter Wall (who duets with Dean on “You’re Lucky She’s Lonely”), Robert Ellis, Whitney Rose and Brennen Leigh.

W/ N*SYNCed Up

Major Tomboys

Ziggy Stardust fell to Earth once upon a time. It is the mission of Major Tomboys to pay tribute to his god-given ass. Major Tomboys is Portland’s all-femme David Bowie tribute band founded by Renée Muzquiz (lead singer/guitar) and Lauren Hatch (keyboard) in the summer of 2018. There was a flash of lightning, an explosion of glitter, and suddenly a band was formed (the real story is a lot less exciting and involves the magic of Craigslist, but don't tell anyone).

As self-proclaimed Bowie nerds, Major Tomboys love to dress up in costumes and share their interpretations of his music with those who also long to rock out in their frock coats and bipperty bopperty hats. From “Wham bam, thank you, ma’am” to “Ch-ch-ch-changes,” they’ll have you singing along with your favorite tracks before you know it.

In the past, you may have seen them at Pride parties, Rose City Rollers’ events, the Risk/Reward Festival and more. Joined by Ruba Tuesday (lead guitar), Sarah FitzGerald (bass), Jolie Clausen (drums) and new addition Dani Tanzella (saxophone), they are finally back from their pandemic hiatus and ready to be rockin’ rollin’ bitches for
you!

N*SYNCed Up

Portland’s premiere non-boy band N*SYNCed Up has got the flow! Featuring members of local Portland bands Creature Party, Triple Lutz, and Railing, research suggests that N*SYNCed Up is the first and only *NSYNC tribute band of its kind. You won’t see any boys in this band, but you will see all members of N*SYNCed Up wielding live instruments, singing, doing choreography, and making your body rock. Serving up a punk rock edge to the classic hits, N*SYNCed Up is here to make you people scream since Halloween 2022!

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Texas native Rhett Miller is perhaps best known as the frontman of the Dallas-based alt-country band the Old 97’s, although he has also pursued a critically acclaimed solo career. Formed in 1993, the Old 97’s built a devoted following with their brash blend of country and power pop influences, making a splash with 1995’s Wreck Your Life, which won the group a brief stay on the roster of Elektra Records, a period kicked off with one of their finest hours, 1997’s Too Far to Care. All four members also pursued side projects, but Miller’s solo career captured the most attention, with the literate songwriter training his eye on such subjects as fatherhood, sex, and love. Making his solo bow with 2002’s The Instigator, most of Miller’s solo albums have been dominated by cool, melodic pop tunes with a drier and more confessional bent than his work with the band, though 2012’s The Dreamer explored a middle ground between his pop and alt-country sensibilities, and the 2011 set The Interpreter: Live at Largo revealed he’s a sure hand with other people’s songs.

Strictly speaking, Miller launched his own career before the Old 97’s were formed. He recorded his first solo album, a series of acoustic folk songs entitled Mythologies, in 1989. Future Old 97’s bassist (and a solid songwriter in his own right) Murry Hammond produced the album, and their partnership later blossomed into a full-fledged band. While releasing a string of well-received albums with the Old 97’s, Miller and Hammond also performed together as the Ranchero Brothers, a two-man acoustic duo that was originally launched as a means of testing new music for the Old 97’s in front of a live audience. The Ranchero Brothers developed their own distinct following, although no albums resulted from the project.
