    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Most of us humans are able to retreat to the safety of a building or a well-stocked pantry to wait out storms, smoke, or heat waves…but what do all the birds do? Do they also seek shelter? Do they leave? How long can they wait before they must go try to find food? Such decisions can literally mean life or death.

Some amazing adaptations help them decide what to do. For example, information from nearby neighbors can change their brains and how they process stress…and can even affect how large their intestines are! These strategies help them to cope with times of unpredictable food and highlight how important social interactions are for birds.

Dr. Jamie Cornelius and her lab study behavioral and physiological strategies that birds use to cope with unpredictable change. In other words, why do some birds survive better than others when the going gets tough? She’ll describe field and lab experiments that help us understand their needs and what strategies might help them to cope with global change. While many talks centered on climate change can fill you with doom and gloom, this one just might give you reason to hope that mother nature has some tricks up her sleeve.

The concert will also feature a full band and a cast of Portland’s best young singers including Randy Korn, Cam Jordan, Luke Stewart, Jason Nuesa, Isaac O'Farrell, Teague Shattuck, Graham Buyagawan, Terry Kitagawa, Austin Comfort, Danya Torp-Pereda, Marin Donohue, Elsa Dougherty and Maxine Nuesa and fabulous musicians, including Will Amend, Meredith Kaye Clark, Aaron Jodoin, René Ormae-Jarmer and Ross Seligman.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Leapin’ Louie Lichtenstein uses circus, cowboy tricks, a six foot unicycle, and lots of comedy to explore all those wild critters, including us, who fly.

In 400 million years five amazing groups of animals developed flight: Insects, pterosaurs, birds, bats and finally —humans.  Only 66 years after the Wright Brothers invented the airplane, —we landed on the moon.   We’re moving so fast! Can we leave enough room for our amazing wild ecosystems as we jet into the future?

You’ve seen him flinging rope, whips and craziness at the White Album Christmas.  Leapin’ Louie is a master of physical comedy, trick roping, whip cracking, and juggling. He has performed  one-person Leapin’ Louie shows in 35 different countries around the world, including many tours in Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Leapin’ Louie has decided to turn his comedy and cowboy circus skills towards the celebration of the wild diversity of animals on this beautiful planet.  It’s weird and fun.

“Lichtenstein, a multi-talented performer, has to be seen to be believed.”
    --The Oregonian

“‘Awesome’ is a terrible word, but there’s no shame using it – in the truest sense – to describe Leapin’ Louie”  Broadway Baby  ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ (Edinburgh Fringe Festival)

“it's the Wild West lasso-wielding clown Leapin' Louie Lichtenstein who's going to make the $20 price tag well worth your time. The man is freaking amazing. The crowd lost it after every one of his acts—from the 20-foot diameter lasso he swung overhead while riding a super-tall unicycle, to the bull whip he cracked at the front row's faces.”  --Portland Mercury

The man whom Bill Graham called “The best kept secret in the music business”, who taught Joni Mitchell her first guitar techniques, also taught George Harrison of the Beatles his first lessons on sitar, the man who wrote the music to Donovan’s “Season Of The Witch” and has played with many of the finest musicians in the world including Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. He’s produced 27 albums and is known around the world for his refusal to bow down to commercialism in the music industry.

He has done what many singer/songwriters don’t do, which is to continue to evolve his creative skills in his concerts. When he comes into a venue, he brings the sounds of an entire Symphony Orchestra in real time and plays the songs so many love as close as possible to what was recorded on the albums. All in real time! All solo!

He has a powerful new show he is debuting on his 2024 tour. This is a show you do not want to miss!

Join Oregon Humanities for a conversation about community, belonging, and ending violence with Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, a gang intervention, rehab, and reentry program based in Los Angeles.

Father Boyle is a Jesuit priest who served as a pastor in Boyle Heights during the wave of gang-related violence that began in the 1980s and peaked in 1992, when more than one thousand people were killed in the city. While law enforcement and criminal justice authorities turned to suppression and mass incarceration to address gang violence, Boyle and members of his parish and community adopted a radical approach: treating gang members as human beings.

Today, Homeboy Industries employs and trains former gang members in a range of social enterprises and provides critical services to thousands of people each year.

This event is part of Oregon Humanities’ series on Fear and Belonging.

    Calling out for human rights.
A concert featuring trailblazing composers, poets, and activists showcasing dynamic new works that look to our past to inspire a better future. Join us and be the first to hear the world premiere of From the Book of Sankofa, a new work commissioned by Resonance Ensemble composed by critically acclaimed jazz pianist Darrell Grant (who ‘Gramophone’ calls “a composer of substance”) with poetry by award-winning writer, A. Mimi Sei.

    The evening also includes:
Works by Joel Thompson, known for his powerful choral work Seven Last Words for the Unarmed and his opera The Snowy Day
Melissa Dunphy’s Amendment: Righting Our Wrongs, a piece that juxtaposes voices of the founding fathers with those of minoritized women fighting for universal voting rights, including Ida B. Wells and Stacy Abrams.
Guest performer Nancy Ives will play cello, both on the Grant world premiere and in the Dunphy
Taylor Stewart, the visionary founder of the Oregon Remembrance Project, who will share impactful stories throughout the performance, including those of Alonzo Tucker, Oregon’s most widely documented African American victim of lynching.  Stewart, known for his thought-provoking TEDx Talk, "How do you reconcile a lynching?," will also highlight the Oregon Remembrance Project's groundbreaking work, aiming to reconcile Oregon's history of racial injustice and pave the way for meaningful social change.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Can we change the minds of science deniers? Encounters with flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, coronavirus truthers, and others.

“Climate change is a hoax—and so is coronavirus.” “Vaccines are bad for you.” These days, many of our fellow citizens reject scientific expertise and prefer ideology to facts. They are not merely uninformed—they are misinformed. They cite cherry-picked evidence, rely on fake experts, and believe conspiracy theories.

How can we convince such people otherwise? How can we get them to change their minds and accept the facts when they don’t believe in facts? In this Science on Tap, Lee McIntyre shows that anyone can fight back against science deniers, and argues that it’s important to do so. Science denial can kill.

Drawing on his own experience—including a visit to a Flat Earth convention—as well as academic research, How to Talk to a Science Denier outlines the common themes of science denialism, present in misinformation campaigns ranging from tobacco companies’ denial in the 1950s that smoking causes lung cancer to today’s anti-vaxxers. He describes attempts to use his persuasive powers as a philosopher to convert Flat Earthers; surprising discussions with coal miners; and conversations with a scientist friend about genetically modified organisms in food. McIntyre offers tools and techniques for communicating the truth and values of science, emphasizing that the most important way to reach science deniers is to talk to them calmly and respectfully—to put ourselves out there, to meet them face to face.

Lee McIntyre is a Research Fellow at the Center for Philosophy and History of Science at Boston University and a recent Lecturer in Ethics at Harvard Extension School. He holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. Formerly Executive Director of the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University, he has also served as a policy advisor to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard.

McIntyre’s latest book is On Disinformation (which will also be available at the show). He’s also a native Portlander and grew up about a mile from the Alberta Rose Theatre!
