    Tracy Grammer

    Portland, OR
    United States
Doors at 6:00 PM, Show at 7:00 PM

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Tracy Grammer is one of the most beloved acts in contemporary folk music. Called "one of the finest pure musicians anywhere in folkdom," (Boston Globe), she has performed on coffeehouse, theater, and festival stages since 1997, and has been a guest on Mountain Stage, World Cafe, River City Folk, SiriusXM Radio, and Folk Alley. With pristine fingerstyle guitar, percussive strums, dynamic vocals, and incantatory narratives, Tracy delivers a polished, personal show notable for its melodies, heart-forward content, and engaging, authentic delivery. It's often the case at the end of the show that audiences can't decide which moved them more -- the songs, or the stories behind them.

Tracy's journey in music has been marked by both tragedy and triumph. In 2002, then-duo partner and songwriter Dave Carter died suddenly while on tour. Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, heralded as "the new voice of folk music" by the Associated Press, was riding high on the success of their third album, DRUM HAT BUDDHA, and had just finished a five-week bus tour with Joan Baez as featured artists and Baez's band mates. Tracy's determination and grace in the wake of unfathomable loss, and her transparency as she gained her footing as a solo artist, have earned her a devoted, lifelong following, who see her concerts as nothing less than a celebration of courage, bravery, vulnerability, and love. As one fan puts it, "With Tracy, it's not just about the music -- it's a soul journey."

The Alberta Rose is Tracy's Portland home.  Come welcome her back once more!

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The Pacific Northwest is due for a major earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and a magnitude 9 Cascadia earthquake and tsunami would likely produce an unprecedented catastrophe much larger than any disaster the state of Oregon has ever faced.

Oregon’s resilience to earthquakes is low, thus, preparing for a catastrophic disaster to become more resilient is needed to improve personal safety and safeguard communities and businesses. At this Science on Tap, Yumei Wang, engineer and geologist, will discuss Oregon’s earthquake setting, expected impacts from a Cascadia earthquake, and how Portlanders are preparing for “the really big one.”

Yumei Wang focuses on deficient infrastructure to improve community safety for Cascadia earthquakes and tsunamis and extreme weather disasters. She consults on disaster resilience projects including to DEQ on their forthcoming fuel terminal safety regulation, is Affiliate Faculty Senior Advisor on Infrastructure Resilience and Risk at PSU, and served for 26 years in the State of Oregon’s Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. Wang has conducted worldwide post-earthquake engineering damage assessments including the 2011 Tohoku, Japan and 2010 Maule, Chile disasters, and appeared in documentaries produced by OPB, NOVA, National Geographic, and Discovery. In 2022, she received the Public Service Award from The Geological Society of America, was named Engineer of the Year by the Professional Engineers of Oregon, and has served as a U.S. Congressional Fellow in Washington DC.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
After pursuing separate careers as sidemen, Joey and Dave Landreth launched The Bros. Landreth with 2013’s Let It Lie, a debut album that drew upon the shared soundtrack of their childhood — Bonnie Raitt’s blues, Little Feat’s funky country-rock, Ry Cooder’s eclectic instrumentals, Lyle Lovett’s twangy traditionalism — for a sound that saluted the past while planting its flag firmly in the present. Let It Lie was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, winning the 2015 JUNO Award for “Roots & Traditional Album Of The Year – Group,” earning The Bros. Landreth a nomination for “International Artist of the Year” at the 2016 UK Americana Music Awards, and receiving praise from heroes like Bonnie Raitt.

Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter, road-dog, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee, he took a semester in Ireland, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since.

Tonight these two fine acts come together for a co-headline bill at the Alberta Rose.  Fantastic music will be played and fans will be made.  Don't miss it!

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Join Oregon Humanities for a conversation about family, belonging, and gender with Casey Parks.

A longtime reporter for the Oregonian, Casey Parks now covers gender and family issues for the Washington Post, where she has written about abortion access, Texas’ investigation of parents of trans kids, and the long tail of the US military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. In her 2022 book, Diary of a Misfit, Parks relates her own story of coming out in a rural Louisiana town in 2002 and her efforts to uncover the story of Roy Hudgins, a small-town singer who, like Parks, didn’t conform to the expectations of his community. This conversation—the first in our 2023–2024 Consider This series about fear and belonging—will explore how attitudes about gender affect where people seem to fit in. We'll also discuss where these attitudes come from and how they might change.

This event is part of Oregon Humanities’ series on Fear and Belonging.

Join Emmy award-winning host Luke Burbank for the taping of Live Wire, the fastest growing entertainment show on public radio. We've got a late-night stride, an Oscar Wilde wit, and the charisma of Ferris Bueller grand marshaling a parade. Music, comedy, and conversation, live and packed with surprises.

    Featuring:

    R. ERIC THOMAS
    R. Eric Thomas is the bestselling author of Here for It: Or, How to Save Your Soul in America, a Lambda Literary Award finalist, and the YA novel Kings of B’more, a Stonewall Honor book. Both books were also featured as Read with Jenna book-club picks on Today. He is also a television writer (Apple TV+’s Dickinson, FX’s Better Things), a Lambda Literary Award-winning playwright, and the long-running host of The Moth in Philadelphia.

    SAFIYA SINCLAIR
Safiya Sinclair was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She is the author of the memoir How to Say Babylon, the stunning story of her struggle to break free of her rigid Rastafarian upbringing, ruled by her father’s strict patriarchal views and repressive control of her childhood, to find her own voice as a woman and poet. Publisher’s Weekly calls it “a tour de force” and Kirkus Review writes that the book is “more than catharsis; this is a memoir as liberation.”

    NO-NO BOY
No-No Boy tells stories rooted in years of research and relationship-building, made vibrant and profound through a rich congregation of instrumental, environmental, and electronically manipulated sounds from Asia and America. The project developed as the central component of Julian Saporiti’s PhD at Brown University, drawing on years of fieldwork and research on Asian American history to write folk songs with uncommon empathy and remarkable protagonists: prisoners at Japanese American internment camps who started a jazz band, Vietnamese musicians turned on to rock ‘n’ roll by American troops, a Cambodian American painter who painted only the most beautiful landscapes of his war-torn home. Along the way he started to draw on his own family’s history, including his mother’s escape from Vietnam during the war. His 2021 album 1975 was called "a remarkably powerful and moving album,” by Folk Alley and “gentle, catchy and accessible folk songs that feel instantly familiar," by NPR. His third album, "Empire Electric", further examines narratives of imperialism, identity, and spirituality, and is being released by Smithsonian Folkways this fall.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

A split decision dictates our life’s course and can often leave us wondering of the “what-ifs.” Our contentment in the outcome of our choices can merely just be a matter of perspective. A powerful collective of aerial dancers twist and turn through this story while surrounded by a stunning visual and encompassing soundscape.

Featuring a musical score and live performance by Eastghost, AKA Ryan James Akeley

A-WOL was created in 2003 as a “Collective,” using the different strengths and skills of all company members, both on and off stage, and liberating audiences from traditional ideas of what it means to dance. Mingling the worlds of dance and aerial, A-WOL’s dancers ignite a wonder and curiosity for what can happen when a human body takes flight. The physicality of their movement both on the floor and in the air, conveys striking fearlessness and unmistakable rigor. A-WOL seeks to defy expectation, ignite inspiration, and foster creativity.

Lo Preciso (which translate as “exactness” in English) is the newest contemporary Flamenco work by Spanish dancer and choreographer Rafael Ramírez. This intense solo dance work is accompanied by four musicians as a dueling quest for artistic precision and is an ecstatic call and response delivery of the masculine prowess of the genre.

About the Artist: Rafael Ramírez hails from Malaga, Spain, and became a professional dancer at the age of 11 under the tutelage of such masters as “La Lupi”, Rafael Campallo, Oscar de los Reyes and Javier Barón. His steady ascent has led him to renown Flamenco festivals, including Jerez Festival, Gran Teatro Cervantes in Malaga, the Biennale of Seville and the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas (La Unión). He has performed throughout the world with the dance companies of luminaries such as Antonio Andrade, Carmen Mota, David Coria, Rafaela Carrasco and María Pagés and also took the stage at the most prestigious tablaos (flamenco venues) in Seville and Madrid.
