PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1954, Grammy winning singer songwriter and multi- instrumentalist Tim O’Brien grew up singing in church and in school. After seeing Doc Watson on TV, became a lifelong devotee of old time and bluegrass music. Tim started touring nationally in 1978 with Colorado bluegrass band Hot Rize. His songs “Walk the Way the Wind Blows” and “Untold Stories” were bluegrass hits for Hot Rize, and country hits for Kathy Mattea. Soon more artists like Nickel Creek, Garth Brooks, and The Dixie Chicks covered his songs. Over the years, Tim has collaborated with his sister Mollie O’Brien, songwriter Darrell Scott, and noted old time musician Dirk Powell, as well as with Steve Earle, Mark Knopfler, Dan Auerbach and Sturgill Simpson.

Living in Nashville since 1996, O’Brien’s skills on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo make him an in demand session player. He tours throughout the US and abroad, most often with his partner Jan Fabricius on mandolin and vocals. His regular band includes Fabricius along with Mike Bub (bass) and Shad Cobb (fiddle). The International Bluegrass Music Association awarded him song of the year in 2006 and named him best male vocalist in 1993 and 2006. He was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2013. $30 Advance$40 At the Door

Darrell Scott comes from a musical family with a father who had him smitten with guitars by the age of 4, alongside a brother who played Jerry Reed style as well. From there, things only ramped up with literature and poetry endeavors while a student at Tufts University, along with playing his way through life. This would never change.

After recently touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band (2 years with each), and producing albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark and being named “songwriter of the year” for both ASCAP and NSAI, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property and playing music. He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories, and is as busy as always writing, producing, performing, and just plain fully immersing himself in life.

Paula Fuga and her band return to the Alberta Rose for a great evening of contemporary Hawaiian music.

Exquisite vocals, powerful lyrics and gorgeous melodies have earned Paula widespread critical praise and an incredibly dedicated fan base. She is complex, intelligent and real, her songwriting and performances filled with depth and passion. It is almost impossible to peg her into one genre — with a beautiful disposition, sweet island vibes and Jawaiian roots reggae in the mix, her music has been called modern Hawaiian soul. She is praised for her deep intensity and emotion with a personal style that is widely appealing, endearing audiences to her around the world.

Her first release Lilikoi earned her the Na Hoku Award (Hawai‘i’s “Grammy”) for Most Promising Artist of the Year in 2007. A blend of tradition and evolution, her music features soul and jazz–infused lyrics, seamlessly mixing English and Hawaiian languages, supporting herself on ‘ukulele with her 2-pc band, and an engaging voice that makes immediate connection with audiences.

Scientists often work for decades to unlock the mysteries of our world and make our lives better. But when you’re trying to explain that amazing work to a wider audience, you’re lucky to have about 10 minutes (unless you’re Science on Tap, of course). At this very special Science on Tap, a behind-the-scenes look at how the folks behind the new OPB show “All Science. No Fiction.” communicate science.  How do they pull off all the different things they do on camera to try to get you as excited about science in the Pacific Northwest as they are?

All Science. No Fiction.“ uses whimsy, curiosity and fun to place a spotlight on PNW scientists and the work and they’re doing. These stories are about new marvels of technology, cutting edge solutions and inventions and grand ideas that pass the HCTC (Holy Crap That’s Cool!) test.

Jes Burns and Brandon Swanson are the production team behind “All Science. No Fiction.”  Jes is a science reporter and producer for OPB’s Science & Environment unit. Brandon is a videographer and editor, working on OPB shows like Oregon Field Guide. They’ve worked in some places, won some awards, and really dig scientists and making videos about their work.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Tracy Grammer is one of the most beloved acts in contemporary folk music. Called "one of the finest pure musicians anywhere in folkdom," (Boston Globe), she has performed on coffeehouse, theater, and festival stages since 1997, and has been a guest on Mountain Stage, World Cafe, River City Folk, SiriusXM Radio, and Folk Alley. With pristine fingerstyle guitar, percussive strums, dynamic vocals, and incantatory narratives, Tracy delivers a polished, personal show notable for its melodies, heart-forward content, and engaging, authentic delivery. It's often the case at the end of the show that audiences can't decide which moved them more -- the songs, or the stories behind them. Tracy's journey in music has been marked by both tragedy and triumph. In 2002, then-duo partner and songwriter Dave Carter died suddenly while on tour. Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, heralded as "the new voice of folk music" by the Associated Press, was riding high on the success of their third album, DRUM HAT BUDDHA, and had just finished a five-week bus tour with Joan Baez as featured artists and Baez's band mates. Tracy's determination and grace in the wake of unfathomable loss, and her transparency as she gained her footing as a solo artist, have earned her a devoted, lifelong following, who see her concerts as nothing less than a celebration of courage, bravery, vulnerability, and love. As one fan puts it, "With Tracy, it's not just about the music -- it's a soul journey."In addition to performing internationally, Tracy has judged Kerrville New Folk, served as a Folk Alliance panelist and mentor, led songwriting workshops, hosted the Dave Carter Memorial Writer's Round-up for eight years, taught choral music at private high schools in Massachusetts, and delivered the keynote at Cape May Singer-Songwriter Weekend. She has toured as bandmate and opening act for Joan Baez, performed with Hugh Masekela and Odetta as part of New York State's Songs of the Spirit Tour, and recorded with Mary Chapin Carpenter. She is the only performer invited to play the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 13 years in a row and promoters everywhere agree: the photos don't do her justice.Tracy returns to perform in Portland for the first time in years.  Don't miss it!Tickets:$25 Advance$30 At the Door

Located in the heart of the eclectic Alberta Arts District, the Alberta Rose originally opened as a motion picture house in 1927 and showed films until it closed in 1978. The theatre has 300 fixed seats and radiates the serene feeling of a Spanish-Colonial courtyard. The Alberta Rose is a mid-size, seated listening room where the audience can enjoy excellent lines of sight, outstanding acoustics and where every seat feels close to the stage and the artist.
