Black Violin is composed of classically trained violist and violinist Wil Baptiste and Kev Marcus who combine their classical training and hip-hop influences to create a distinctive multi-genre sound that is often described as “classical boom”. The band released their major label debut Stereotypes (featuring Black Thought of The Roots and MC Pharoahe Monch) on Universal Music which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart and #4 on the Billboard R&B Chart. NPR took note and declared “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation”.

Wil and Kev place heavy emphasis on educational outreach and have perform for more than 100,000 students each year. Recently, they were announced as Turnaround Artists for Mary B. Bethune Elementary School in their hometown of Broward County, FL. Turnaround Arts, a national education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, infuses arts into struggling schools to support overall reform efforts. Through their student engagement and public performances, Black Violin challenge the stereotypes and preconceived notion of what a “classical musician” looks and sounds like. “The stereotypes are always there, embedded so deep in our culture,” says Wil. “Just by nature of our existence we challenge those ideas. It’s a unique thing that brings people together who aren’t usually in the same room, and in the current climate, it’s good to bring people together.”

The band is endorsed by Yamaha Music and Bose and has partnered with the National Association for Music Manufacturers (NAMM) to continue their advocacy for accessible music education.

The band’s Give Thanks Holiday Tour employs playful storytelling, whimsical string melodies, and hard-hitting beats to highlight the unifying pillars of the holiday season: Giving back to others and being wholeheartedly thankful. Fans can expect holiday favorites from their Give Thanks album and hits from their Grammy-nominated Take the Stairs album (including top hits “Impossible is Possible” and “Showoff”), which Billboard claims “continues to celebrate Black Violin’s genre-less approach to music.”

It’s not just a concert…it’s a party! Spend a nostalgic evening at the Miller Theater saluting two of the world's most beloved musical groups who were instrumental in creating the Doo Wop Rock & Roll sound: The Drifters and Cornell Gunter’s Coasters.

The Drifters took the ardent fervor of their gospel days and channeled it into soulful R&B arrangements about typical lives, elevating the everyday to a state of sanctity. The Drifters are known for several classic hits including: “Up on the Roof”, “Under the Boardwalk”, “This Magic Moment”, “There Goes My Baby”, “Dance with Me”, “Spanish Harlem”, “Stand by Me”, and many more.

The Coasters had a string of hits in the 50s and 60s, including “Searchin”, “Young Blood”, “Yakkety Yak”, “Charlie Brown” and “Poison Ivy”. Cornell Gunter was a longtime member of The Coasters in the early years, and his group, Cornell Gunter’s Coasters, continues the legacy to this day!

With such incredible musical diversity -- from the comedy of Cornell Gunter’s Coasters to the Motown magic of The Drifters -- this show has songs to please everyone!

WANDA SYKES is an Emmy winning stand up comic, writer, actress and producer who has been entertaining audiences for over twenty years. She has ranked among Entertainment Weekly's “25 Funniest People in America” and her peers have called her “one of the funniest stand-up comics” in the field.

In 2020, Wanda received Emmy nominations for both her role as real-life comic ‘Moms Mabley’ in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and for her voice work as ‘Gladys Murphy’ in Crank Yankers, a role she originated in 2004. Wanda’s guest-starring role on ABC’s Black-ish also brought her two back-to-back Emmy nominations for “Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series” in 2017 and 2018. Her fifth and latest standup special, Wanda Sykes: Not Normal, is currently streaming on Netflix and was nominated for two 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards; “Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special” and “Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.” The special also received a Broadcast Critic Award nomination.

Wanda can currently be seen in season 2 of the Netflix’s comedy The Upshaws, which she is writing, co-showruning and starring in. The Upshaws centers on a working-class African American family in Indiana struggling to make it work and make it right without any blueprints. The show was recently picked up for a second season with 16 episodes. Season one was nominated for a People’s Choice Award and a 2022 NAACP Image Award. She recently produced and was a part of the Apple TV+ 5-part documentary series Visible; Out on Television, about how the LGBTQ movement has shaped the history of the medium. Each hour-long episode explores themes of homophobia, the evolution of the LGBTQ character, and coming out in the television industry.

Named one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch in 2021, Kountry Wayne (a.k.a. Wayne Colley) has garnered a loyal following from his widely popular digital sketches and hilarious standup, generating an extraordinary amount of buzz among his peers within the entertainment industry as one of comedy’s most notable rising stars.

Since his first Facebook post in October 2014 went viral, the charismatic comic has amassed millions of followers across Facebook and Instagram, where fans tune in daily to his viral sketches featuring original characters such as Drip and Buddy, with cameos from notable celebrities including Ludacris, Mike Epps, Charlamagne tha God and Lamar Odom, to name a few.

“My hashtag, my mantra, is ‘Help is On The Way!’ – that’s my slogan, I own it, because I believe God’s got my back and your back and whatever is stressing you out today, it won’t last because help is truly on the way,” says Wayne, whose endearingly funny way with English comes from growing up “Kountry” in Millen, GA (pop. 3500), between Statesboro and Augusta. He was given what became his stage name during a stint living and going to school in Savannah in the mid-2000s.

With his humble roots and unbridled energy, Wayne continues to build his audience with cutting edge yet clean, curse free material whose appeal transcends all cultural lines and is fit for (and often draws) the whole family. All while still posting content online daily.

IT’S OUR TIME!

The Augusta Symphony welcomes you to the Miller Theater – a beautiful new home for music.

After a renovation project spanning more than seven years, the historic Miller Theater, which originally served Augusta as a vaudeville and movie palace from 1940 to 1984, reopened on January 6, 2018. Expect diverse offerings that will engage, entertain and educate.

Love, attention to detail and generosity have fueled this comprehensive restoration project which reanimates the original glory of the Art Moderne stylings of the iconic theater and combines it with contemporary technology and amenities.

We invite you to become part of the continuing history of the Miller Theater.
