Each ticket includes a copy of Chuck Klosterman's new book 'Raised in Captivity: Fictional Nonfiction'.Klostermaniacs rejoice: Boswell Book Company and Turner Hall Ballroom present a special evening with beloved cultural critic Cluck Klosterman, in conversation with Doug Gordon, producer and host of WPR's 'BETA'! Klosterman's latest release, 'Raised in Captivity', is a razor-sharp, hilarious collection of "fictional non-fiction" - stories so true they had to be wrapped in fiction for our own protection.
'Raised in Captivity' is ceaselessly inventive, hostile to corniness in all its forms and mean only to the things that really deserve it. Klosterman's wildly entertaining and mind-bending stories are microdoses of straight dope, a fever graph of our deepest unvoiced hopes, fears and preoccupations: A man flying first class discovers a puma in the lavatory. A band wrestles with new-found fame when its song becomes a white supremacist anthem. A man sees a whale struck by lightning and knows that everything about his life has to change. The funny, wise and weird converge in one of the most original story collections in recent memory, one that marks a cosmic leap forward for one of our most consistently interesting writers, the man The Los Angeles Times says, "has a knack for holding up a magical high-def mirror to American pop culture."Smoke free. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
In this modern age of music, genres blend together as naturally as the river flows into the sea. With the expansive library of all the music of the world from every time period at our fingertips, creative artists seem to be more and more liberated from the archaic mentality of being pigeonholed into one genre or demographic. Mike Love is at the forefront of this movement. With a foundation rooted in the spirituality and message-based music of Reggae and Rastafari, he blends the sounds of progressive and classic rock, pop, R & B, soul, blues, flamenco, jazz and so much more. Healing is at the core of his music. With ever evolving live performances, Love keeps his organically grown fanbase returning again and again to witness the evolution of tried and true fan favorites, and the ever-expanding repertoire of new music that is constantly surfacing. Fans often leave live performances remarking about how they have just been to church, or had a bad day turned around.Smoke free. All ages. w/ special guest Caleb ElliotWith his new album, The Hurting Kind, John Paul White has crafted a stunning album that draws on the lush, orchestrated music made in Nashville in the early 1960s - Yet whether he's writing about overwhelming love, unraveling relationships, or the fading memory of a loved one, the songs retain a modern feel.
White cultivated his career in Nashville for two decades, first as a songwriter for a major publisher, then as half of The Civil Wars - a groundbreaking duo that won four Grammy Awards before disbanding in 2012. Because The Civil Wars were so hard to categorize, White has earned a fan base among indie rock listeners, folk audiences, Americana outlets, and AAA radio. So, what will happen if people hear The Hurting Kind and call it country? "Well, that doesn't scare me in the least," he says. "As a matter of fact, it kind of thrills me."Smoke free. All ages. Most of the time, Clay takes lead vocal with Chance on high harmony, a striking blend that appears effortless. This obvious camaraderie is a big part of the group’s appeal. “People say they can see it and they can feel it,” Clay says. “I mean, we’ve been friends forever, it feels like. It’s a brotherhood. Born out of a collaboration at the inaugural 2015 Eaux Claires music festival, Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso) and Chris Rosenau (Volcano Choir), both also previously members of Milwaukee's Collections of Colonies of Bees, looked at each other after the final note of their impromptu set, knowing they were onto something special. After collaborating annually at each subsequent Eaux Claires festival, the duo took to a cabin in North Carolina to record their first album as Rosenau & Sanborn, 'Bluebird'.
"The titles are the working titles we used that weekend, the mixes are the mixes we made as we were packing up that weekend, the pictures are the pictures we took that weekend. Our hope is for all of these things come together for you, the listener, as they did for us; to relay what we saw, what we heard, and how we felt that weekend. It's definitely not a traditional way to present a record, but it's definitely the way we'd like to present this record." - Chris RosenauSmoke free. All ages. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
With special guest: French VanillaStef Chura's debut studio album, Messes, is born of her years of experience playing around the Michigan underground, setting up DIY shows in the area, and moving around the state. "Right when it starts to feel like home/It's time to go," she sings literally on its opening cut, 'Slow Motion', a twisty, dim-lit guitar pop song where she curls and stretches every word. There are worlds of emotion in the ways Chura pronounces phrases with twang and grit, alternatingly full of despair, playfulness, and abandon. Chura calls her music "emotional collage," eschewing start-to-finish storylines in favour of writing intuitively about feelings, drawing from experiences and references related to a certain sentiment.
Originally from Alpena, Michigan, Chura moved to the Ypsilanti area in 2009, where she began playing shows before ultimately moving to Detroit in 2012. Chura has been home-recording and self-releasing her songs for six years, playing bass in friends' bands as well. With a trove of demos and 4-track home recordings, some of which she'd released on small runs of cassettes over the years, Chura says she wasn't sure what to do with her life before heading into the studio. "One of my best friends passed away and I thought, what do I have to do before I die? I have to at least make one record."
She recorded the entire album with Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good To Me) throughout 2015. Thomas plays bass on most of the record, and a bit of guitar and drums. Drummer Ryan Clancy of Jamaican Queens and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. adds the bulk of the drums. Through intricate guitar work and warm, textured production, Messes finds her trying to make sense of life's ups and downs. "It's about emotional mess, not physical mess," Chura says. "The title track is about knowing that you are going to do something the wrong way, but you're doing it anyway because you want that experience. I've had to do a lot of things the wrong way in order to figure out how to live my life."Smoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
When Mason Jennings started writing songs for his new record, Songs From When We Met, he was in a setting he had never written in before. “I was living out at a farm for a month and walking through some old woods on the property every day. There was a river. And each day an owl would come find me, and then perch above me, day or night. I saw lots of snakes. Songs just came to me there. They were coming in so fast they just about took my head off. It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before,” recalls Jennings. In Native American animal medicine snakes symbolize rebirth, owls symbolize seeing what others cannot and turning darkness into light. Both are themes throughout the album and the music has a clear hopeful feeling.
Songs From When We Met pulls you in from the start, with Jennings telling the listener, “Get into my car now…let’s leave the city”. “Cursive Prayers is the first song I wrote for the album. I hadn’t written anything in a long time and any time I tried writing things I wrote were very dark. This song is so hopeful and full of love it surprised me. I think it was the beginning of things getting better in my life, like a message from another dimension.”
“The last record was made in a real dark time for me. I was battling a lot of dark energy. Since then I’ve healed a lot and a lot of changes have taken place. I got divorced. I’ve been healing from agoraphobia. It’s been a rough patch but thankfully this record is about healing and hope. I fell in love and got married so it is mostly about love.” A great ambassador for the album is the slow grooving “I Know You”. “The lyrics at the end of this song sum up the love tone of this album: “Most people don’t make sense to me, I don’t know much in this world you see, but I know you.”
The story of Songs From When We Met comes to an end with the track “Magic Is Real”. “The rain on this track is real. We opened the doors of the studio and put mics up and that’s the sound of rain on the trees in Wisconsin. Rain is healing.”
At the time in his career where a lot of musicians burn out, Mason has new energy and drive. “I’m just happy to have found true love and to be healing from that dark time. I was struggling to find hope and it found me. Music just burst out of me this year. It’s always been a life line but this is the most open I’ve felt.”Smoke free. All ages. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
When you listen to Over the Rhine, the supremely talented musical couple comprised of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, you quickly fall under the spell of Karin’s timeless voice “which has the power to stop the world in its tracks” (Performing Songwriter). But then the songs start hitting you. Paste magazine writes, “Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary” and included Bergquist and Detweiler in their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. Rolling Stone recently wrote, Over the Rhine is a band “with no sign of fatigue, whose moment has finally arrived.” That’s quite a sentiment for a band celebrating 30 years of writing, recording, and life on the road. But as Karin Bergquist states, “There is still so much music left to be made.” Love & Revelation, the brand new album from Over the Rhine, is a record for right now. The songs have been rigorously road tested and burst at the seams with loss, lament, and resilient hope. The LA Times writes, “The Ohio based husband and wife duo has long been making soul-nourishing music, and the richness only deepens.”Smoke free. All ages. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
A self-made singer/songwriter, Matt Wertz spent years creating soulful, feel-good pop music on his own terms. Nashville - a city that doubled as his muse and adopted hometown - always played a big role in that creation process. It was the place where Wertz wrote his songs, the place he recorded his albums, and the place he'd return after touring the country with songwriters like Jason Mraz, Parachute, Gavin DeGraw, Ben Rector and Dave Barnes.
This year, Wertz returns with his newest album, 'Weights & Wings'. "It's like I made a gift for someone," he muses. "I created this scrapbook for someone, and I've saved all these memories and things I've put together. I'm going to give it to them for their birthday... I'm excited, but the real joy is seeing them open that gift."Smoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Lorely Rodriguez, the artist known as Empress Of, recorded her new album, Us, all over Southern California. Topanga Canyon. Ojai. At a recording studio “with no windows.” At her home in Highland Park. At another recording studio “with a really loud cricket.” “He was there, like, all month,” she says, “And I was trying to track vocal tracks and he’d be like, CHIRP, CHIRP!”
It was the first time she tried to record music this way-sequestered, for a month at a time, in between touring and performing, alone but for the company of a cricket. She would later invite collaborators-Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), LA production duo Sam Griesemer and Jerome Potter of DJDS, Spanish electronic producer Pional-but the resulting project remains a showcase of Rodriguez’ skill both as a lyricist and a producer, though she is wont to admit it. The artist is modest about her skills as a instrumentalist (“Lorely plays every instrument half-assed,” she says, “Put that in the bio.”) and coy about her process as a writer (“I don’t write out chords for my songs. Everything is intuitive in production. I don’t have one piece of sheet music for my songs.”)Smoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Hovvdy and Lomelda come to The Back Room for an indie double-header that can't be missed!Hovvdy (pronounced "howdy") is the writing and recording project of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor. The duo, both primarily drummers, first met in the fall of 2014 and quickly bonded over a love for quiet music. Within a few weeks, they had combined songs and began recording their first EP in bedrooms and family homes across Texas. They've found a unique identity in rhythmic, down-tempo pop songs that are hopeful, yet melancholy; relatable, yet distinguishable.
Lomelda's Hannah Reed offers a quiet, introspective lo-fi style of singer-songwriter music. After touring extensively across Texas and releasing numerous full-length albums and EPs, word of her low-key, intimate songcraft spread, and she accepted an invitation to tour with Pinegrove. Her latest full-length album, 'M for Empathy', was released earlier this yearSmoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
As the lead guitarist for the Foo Fighters, Chris Shiflett has established himself as both a prominent sideman in the alt/punk world and a recording artist of his own accord. Making his way through the punk scene with stints in Lost Kittenz, No Use for a Name and Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Shiflett made his debut with the Foo Fighters on 2002's album One by One, and became a permanent member soon after.
Shiflett's newest album, 'Hard Lessons', is a raw blast of Telecaster twang and guitar-forward bang, driven home by autobiographical songwriting and small-town roots with the urgent sound of overdriven guitars, the epic screeches of Marshall tube amplifiers and raw chemistry of a live-in-the-studio band. His most vital album to date, 'Hard Lessons' is a record that blurs the boundaries between country and rock & roll, shining a light once again not only on Shiflett's guitar work but his fiery abilities as a frontman and songwriter, as well.Smoke free.
