PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Since he first appeared on the scene in the early '90s, Williams has defined the term independent artist. And his recordings tell only half the story. Keller built his reputation initially on his engaging live performances, no two of which are ever alike. For most of his career he has performed solo. His stage shows are rooted around Keller singing his compositions and choice cover songs, while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. With the use of today's technology, Keller creates samples on the fly in front of the audience, a technique called live phrase sampling or looping, with nothing pre-recorded. The end result often leans toward a hybrid of alternative folk and groovy electronica, a genre Keller jokingly calls "acoustic dance music" or ADM."
Williams is set to release his 25th studio album, SPEED, in the Fall of 2019, which sees him reunited with his Bluegrass outfit, Keller & The Keels, as they reinterpret popular songs by celebrated artists including The Doors, Kacey Musgraves, Fiona Apple, Weezer and more. SPEED is the trio's third collaboration together and features a combination of originals and covers, performed in their trademark psychedelic Appalachian bluegrass style. Once again showcasing Williams' masterful penchant for collaboration and innovation, SPEED proves he's not planning to slow down any time soon.Smoke free. All ages. + special guest The Mighty PinesFruition's newest album, Wild as the Night, conveys the emotions of our darkest, and sometimes weakest, moments. Influenced equally by acoustic music as well as rock 'n' roll, the eclectic, after-hours vibe comes naturally to the Portland, Oregon-based band, composed of Jay Cobb Anderson (electric guitar, vocals), Kellen Asebroek (piano, acoustic guitar vocals), Jeff Leonard (bass), Mimi Naja (mandolin, electric guitar, vocals) and Tyler Thompson (drums). Their unmistakable vocal blend first revealed itself in 2008 when Anderson tagged along with Asebroek and Naja for an afternoon of busking in Portland. Since that time, they have opened shows for the Wood Brothers, Greensky Bluegrass, and Jack Johnson, and at appeared at festivals like Telluride Bluegrass, Bonnaroo, and DelFest. Wild as the Night follows the band's acclaimed Tucker Martine-produced 2018 album, Watching It All Fall Apart.Smoke free. All ages. If you're playing in Miami, you've got to get bodies moving.
Over the years, the city has been home to Latin pop royalty and ascendant Soundcloud rappers; played host to bass-booming EDM fests and the golden years of disco legends. It's also what's primed Miami's latest genre-defying dynamos Magic City Hippies to take their infectious "Indie Funk, dusted with a taste of Hip Hop, and baked in an oven of Soul" sounds around the world.
"We're always out to entertain people," promises singer-guitarist Robby Hunter. "Miami is a nightlife city," he adds with a tinge of excitement. "People are oriented towards staying out all night. Anything you do has to make them dance."
The band's 2019 release, 'Modern Animal' is set to crown Magic City Hippies as one of streaming's ascendant indie bands, while taking their captivating live show to major festivals like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and BottleRock, alongside plenty of North American headline gigs through 2020.Smoke free. With special guests: Seasaw and DogbadMinneapolis-based pop group, Yam Haus, is winning over the indie dominated scene of the Twin Cities with "electro-poppy grooves and swooning vocals" (Star Tribune, June 2018). Tight guitars, dreamy synths, and clean production from Grammy award-winning producer Mark Heimermann, helped drive year one successes.
Their debut album, "Stargazer," lands with the energy of WALK THE MOON, the charisma of Coldplay, and the emotion of Ed Sheeran. Strong melodies and thoughtful songwriting become even more apparent and powerful when big production and synth-heavy tracks are stripped back with the minimal arrangements of their acoustic EP, "Stargazer Sessions."
Frontman, Lars Pruitt, quips "We had to go with 'Yam Haus' because 'Sweet Potato Shack' was already taken." An acronym, "Yam" stands for "You Are Me," which is their take on the golden rule. Their positivity and broad inclusiveness is mimicked by their audience ranging from toddlers to grandmas and everyone in between. High energy and crafted sets, dedicated fans, and enticing personalities have led to numerous sold out shows and are propelling them into even larger invitations.Smoke free. All ages. With special guest: Victoria CanalTall Heights have relentlessly built a career from the ground up. Starting as buskers on the streets of Boston and now performing in packed venues across North America, Europe, and beyond, the duo has distilled their sound in an organic and unselfconscious way. The unmistakable DNA of their music draws on many elements, but the blend of their two distinct voices, in both harmony and unison, is what elevates it and separates it from the pack.
Hailing from the Boston area, Paul Wright and Tim Harrington met each other in their hometown of Sturbridge through Tim's older brother. The friendship blossomed in high school when they both took up the guitar and began working on music together. It didn't take long for them to see the potential hidden in these casual jam sessions. As Paul recalls, "Tim transformed from kid brother to musical collaborator over the course of a summer."Smoke free. All ages. Ryan Montbleau is a Masschusetts-based singer-songwriter and guitarist whose soulful mix of rock, folk, R&B, Americana and funk has drawn comparisons to John Mayer and Martin Sexton. His songs have a way of weaving themselves into the fabric of his listeners' lives that way, offering up hope and light in moments of darkness and doubt.
"I'm not trying to put out my greatest hits," he concludes. "I'm just trying to create the best and most timely art I can."
In 2005, Ryan and his band headed into Applehead Recording in Saugerties, New York, to cut their debut album. With nothing more than ambition and a relentless work ethic to their names, they bootstrapped the whole thing, maxing out credit cards to fund it themselves and launch their careers from the ground up. Twelve years, eleven records, thousands of shows, and 60 million Spotify streams later, he comes to The Back Room for an intimate solo show. A lot may have changed since Ryan Montbleau first set foot in Applehead Recording, but some things will always stay the same.Smoke free. All ages. With special guest: Slaughter Beach, DogSometimes you have to go back to basics in order to find yourself again. But once you have, then what?
When Scottish rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks were in the process of creating their fourth album, 'The More I Sleep The Less I Dream', they decamped home to Scotland and took a breath. They reverted to their original four members and dealt with several behind the scenes changes. They celebrated a few marriages and tried to remember who they were when not on the road. And they made a decision: No more touring until a new album had been written.
'The More I Sleep The Less I Dream' was that album, marking a new chapter in We Were Promised Jetpacks' career and the conscious decision to go back to the heart of who they are: a high school band that never stopped.Smoke free. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Few artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based, Saskatchewan-raised musician's songs unfold like short fiction: they're densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new album The Neon Skyline, the 11 interconnected tracks follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up. While its overarching narrative is riveting, the real thrill of the album comes from how Shauf finds the humanity and humor in a typical night out and the ashes of a past relationship.
On top of heartbreak, friendship, and the mundane moments of humanity that define his songwriting, Shauf makes music that explores how easy it is to find yourself in familiar patterns and repeat the same mistakes of your past. His characters wonder, "Did this relationship end too soon? Would going to another bar cheer my friend up?" Or in the case of the foreboding "Living Room," where a character asks herself, "How hard is it to give a shit?" the songs on The Neon Skyline ultimately take solace in accepting that life goes on and things will be okay. Shauf says, "there's moments on the album where the characters are thinking 'this is the end of the world.' But there are also moments with some clarity and perspective: Nothing is the end of the world." Smoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. "With their shared DNA and profound connection, the Mattson twins are unlike any band you've seen before." - Washington Post
"The twin-brother jazz duo are experts at channeling the sounds of light and ease, and there's something almost alchemical about their mutual precision." -Pitchfork
"While the two prove to be stellar songwriters, it's their extended jams and vibe-setting that make this such an enticing listen." -Noisey
The Mattson 2 are Jared and Jonathan Mattson, identical twins who have been collaborating almost literally from birth. They formed their psych-jazz group Mattson 2 in 2003, and released their first album, 'Introducing the Mattson 2', in 2009.
Their deep telepathic kinship navigates colorful forms of beautiful weirdness and exotic landscapes of layered improvisation, transcending the concept of modern musical performance. The duo shimmers and shakes with the soaring modern wizardry of Jared Mattson's untamed, layered guitars and Jonathan's tribal jazz hard-bop drumming.
'Paradise', their 8th record released in 2019, marks the first time that the brothers have added vocals and is a masterful piece of psych-jazz, conceptually elegant and thrilling it its execution.Smoke free. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
With special guest: Jack Cloonan BandRising from the forests and rivers of central Wisconsin, Armchair Boogie's high-energy take on the Jamgrass genre fuses intricate arrangements of acoustic guitar and banjo with the funky back beats of electric bass and drums.
Augie Dougherty (banjo, vocals) and Ben Majeska (guitar, vocals) started playing together in the fall of 2014 while attending the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and within a year their musical collaborations led to the formation of Armchair Boogie. Eager to expand their sound for a bigger stage, Augie and Ben recruited bassist Eli Frieders and drummer Dan Waterman to fill out the band's four-piece configuration.
Armchair Boogie solidified their current line-up in the spring of 2017 when Denzel Connor took over for a departing Dan Waterman on drums. In conjunction with the release of their debut, self-titled album, the band moved to Madison, WI, a jumping off point from where Armchair Boogie has become a regular on the upper Midwest festival circuit while also sowing roots in the Rocky Mountains.Smoke free. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
With special guests: Scott Ruth and Derek TedWish You Were Here is a surprising new atmospheric venture from hardcore punk band Stick To Your Guns frontman, Jesse Barnett.
While on the surface this may seem completely out of Barnett's musical realm, it's actually much closer to his roots than most would believe. Growing up listening to musicians like James Taylor and Paul Simon, Wish You Were Here takes a nose dive into what originally influenced Barnett to create. "This is what I've been doing since I was a little kid. As far as the songwriting goes, Stick to Your Guns is a side project; because that world didn't happen to me until I was 14." Barnett continued, "Music like I'm playing now with Wish You Were Here has been my whole life."
Inspired by the grime and grind of Montreal and its inhabitants, Barnett began to regain his love for music, the kind that isn't necessarily marketed to a large audience, rather a means of escapism, and solitude. Listeners can feel that very sentiment throughout the record. It is an album fueled by love and loss, a genuine reflection of mining through fields of pain, and deciphering the process of healing.Smoke free. All ages. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
"Kindred spirits to Reverend Peyton are John Lee Hooker and RL Burnside." - The Washington Post
2019 BMA Award Nominee The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band are the greatest country-blues band in the world, led by Reverend Peyton, who most consider to be the premier finger picker playing today. He has earned a reputation as both a singularly compelling performer and a persuasive evangelist for the rootsy, country blues styles that captured his imagination early in life and inspired him and his band to make pilgrimages to Clarksdale, Mississippi to study under such blues masters as T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour and David "Honeyboy" Edwards.
Now The Big Damn Band is back with an explosive new record and world tour. Reverend Peyton's guitar work on the new record Poor Until Payday is phenomenal and howls the blues. Poor Until Payday is a bluesy ode to the blue collar - working class and it delivers in spades! With special guest: Devil's TeethSmoke free. All ages.
