PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Few artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based, Saskatchewan-raised musician's songs unfold like short fiction: they're densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new album The Neon Skyline, the 11 interconnected tracks follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up. While its overarching narrative is riveting, the real thrill of the album comes from how Shauf finds the humanity and humor in a typical night out and the ashes of a past relationship.
On top of heartbreak, friendship, and the mundane moments of humanity that define his songwriting, Shauf makes music that explores how easy it is to find yourself in familiar patterns and repeat the same mistakes of your past. His characters wonder, "Did this relationship end too soon? Would going to another bar cheer my friend up?" Or in the case of the foreboding "Living Room," where a character asks herself, "How hard is it to give a shit?" the songs on The Neon Skyline ultimately take solace in accepting that life goes on and things will be okay. Shauf says, "there's moments on the album where the characters are thinking 'this is the end of the world.' But there are also moments with some clarity and perspective: Nothing is the end of the world." Smoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. With special guest: Kainalu"With their shared DNA and profound connection, the Mattson twins are unlike any band you've seen before." - Washington Post
"The twin-brother jazz duo are experts at channeling the sounds of light and ease, and there's something almost alchemical about their mutual precision." -Pitchfork
"While the two prove to be stellar songwriters, it's their extended jams and vibe-setting that make this such an enticing listen." -Noisey
The Mattson 2 are Jared and Jonathan Mattson, identical twins who have been collaborating almost literally from birth. They formed their psych-jazz group Mattson 2 in 2003, and released their first album, 'Introducing the Mattson 2', in 2009.
Their deep telepathic kinship navigates colorful forms of beautiful weirdness and exotic landscapes of layered improvisation, transcending the concept of modern musical performance. The duo shimmers and shakes with the soaring modern wizardry of Jared Mattson's untamed, layered guitars and Jonathan's tribal jazz hard-bop drumming.
'Paradise', their 8th record released in 2019, marks the first time that the brothers have added vocals and is a masterful piece of psych-jazz, conceptually elegant and thrilling it its execution.Smoke free. With special guest: Jack Cloonan BandRising from the forests and rivers of central Wisconsin, Armchair Boogie's high-energy take on the Jamgrass genre fuses intricate arrangements of acoustic guitar and banjo with the funky back beats of electric bass and drums.
Augie Dougherty (banjo, vocals) and Ben Majeska (guitar, vocals) started playing together in the fall of 2014 while attending the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and within a year their musical collaborations led to the formation of Armchair Boogie. Eager to expand their sound for a bigger stage, Augie and Ben recruited bassist Eli Frieders and drummer Dan Waterman to fill out the band's four-piece configuration.
Armchair Boogie solidified their current line-up in the spring of 2017 when Denzel Connor took over for a departing Dan Waterman on drums. In conjunction with the release of their debut, self-titled album, the band moved to Madison, WI, a jumping off point from where Armchair Boogie has become a regular on the upper Midwest festival circuit while also sowing roots in the Rocky Mountains.Smoke free. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
With special guests: Scott Ruth and Derek TedWish You Were Here is a surprising new atmospheric venture from hardcore punk band Stick To Your Guns frontman, Jesse Barnett.
While on the surface this may seem completely out of Barnett's musical realm, it's actually much closer to his roots than most would believe. Growing up listening to musicians like James Taylor and Paul Simon, Wish You Were Here takes a nose dive into what originally influenced Barnett to create. "This is what I've been doing since I was a little kid. As far as the songwriting goes, Stick to Your Guns is a side project; because that world didn't happen to me until I was 14." Barnett continued, "Music like I'm playing now with Wish You Were Here has been my whole life."
Inspired by the grime and grind of Montreal and its inhabitants, Barnett began to regain his love for music, the kind that isn't necessarily marketed to a large audience, rather a means of escapism, and solitude. Listeners can feel that very sentiment throughout the record. It is an album fueled by love and loss, a genuine reflection of mining through fields of pain, and deciphering the process of healing.Smoke free. All ages. "Kindred spirits to Reverend Peyton are John Lee Hooker and RL Burnside." - The Washington Post
2019 BMA Award Nominee The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band are the greatest country-blues band in the world, led by Reverend Peyton, who most consider to be the premier finger picker playing today. He has earned a reputation as both a singularly compelling performer and a persuasive evangelist for the rootsy, country blues styles that captured his imagination early in life and inspired him and his band to make pilgrimages to Clarksdale, Mississippi to study under such blues masters as T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour and David "Honeyboy" Edwards.
Now The Big Damn Band is back with an explosive new record and world tour. Reverend Peyton's guitar work on the new record Poor Until Payday is phenomenal and howls the blues. Poor Until Payday is a bluesy ode to the blue collar - working class and it delivers in spades! With special guest: Devil's TeethSmoke free. All ages. Alejandro Escovedo featuring Don Antonio & Alex Ruiz Performing songs from The Crossing, en Español, and moreCrossing borders, jumping barriers, taking risks, betting it all: that's the path Alejandro Escovedo has been taking in his lifelong search for the heart of rock and roll. As comfortable performing with a string ensemble as he is with an amped-up power trio, and as likely to bare his soul in his lyrics as he is to lay out some seriously rocking swagger on guitar, the celebrated singer-songwriter has already played an important role in punk (The Nuns), roots rock (The True Believers) and alt-country (Rang & File) before he launched a solo career that's seen him work with everyone from John Cale to Bruce Springsteen. Don't miss the electrifying return of this six-stringed legend to The Back Room this March!
"Musically, Alejandro Escovedo is in his own genre." - David Fricke, Rolling Stone

The Boxer & Bear TourChris Renzema is a dynamic writer and performer, whose combination of accessible - if a bit disheveled - charm, a love for storytelling, and poignant lyricism, can transform an evening concert into a conversation. Growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Chris learned to play and sing in churches, while ingesting a steady diet of early 70's Folk, Punk Rock, and Wilco. His faith and love for music inseparably interwoven, his personal writing plays out like heartfelt, jagged prayers.
Just as comfortable playing in a living room as he is in a theater, his honest, vulnerable lyrics both encourage and challenge listeners. Powerful drumming and hypnotic basslines lock into grooves that propel self-proclaimed "heavy blues" band King Buffalo from cool, spacious zones into all-out explosive finalés. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Walter Trout's backstory is a page-turner you won't want to put down. Five decades in the making, it is equal parts thriller, romance, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph, offset by wilderness years and brushes with the jaws of narcotic oblivion. There are feted early stints as gunslinger in bands from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers to Canned Heat, and the solo career that's still blazing a quarter-century later.
