"ALL TOGETHER, THAT AND THIS, WITH ALL OUR TRICKS, WE'RE MAKING CHRISTMAS TIME!"

We're back with The Saloon Ensemble's epic production of "The Nitemare B4 Xmas!!!!"

Portland's legendary performance troupe The Saloon Ensemble will once again bring to the stage a live performance of the brilliant Danny Elfman score complete with interactive SING-A-LONGS, a COSTUME CONTEST, everyone's favorite SCREAMING CONTEST and many other 'horrible' surprises!

Celebrate the Halloween season with our annual production that's been packing houses and delivering joyous fun for all spirits, young and old.

"Saloon’s Nitemare is many kinds of show–a kid’s show, a variety show, a retelling of a seasonal myth, a big-band dance show, an enthusiastic singspiel–and there’s something timeless about that sort of despecialization; the production’s smattering of amateurish elements only added to that feeling. But that’s not to say that any of it was poorly performed–the show was grand, simply grand, and the band kicked ass...I hope this show runs for a century."

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Kat Edmonson is an award-winning songwriter and singer "with an equal foothold in jazz, cabaret and vintage cosmopolitanism pop" (The New York Times).  She has been featured on Austin City Limits, Tiny Desk Concerts, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Late Show.

The New York Times describes her music as “fresh as a spring bouquet” while NPR says, “Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen.”

Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid-twentieth century, Kat is a rare artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant. She performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show, interweaving humorous anecdotes, philosophical musings, and her love of film with disarming candor and vulnerability. Her longtime band members’ keen and sensitive accompaniment allows Kat to freely veer off-script as she’s often inclined to do

In the winter of 2022, Kat made her theatrical debut in "The Hang": a new jazz opera by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray. Upon its opening, the off-off Broadway show received "Critic's Pick" in The New York Times highlighting Kat's "extraordinary artistry." About her performance, Vulture praises the burgeoning actress for her "weightless, soaring scat arias," The Wrap says, "Kat Edmonson emerges as the Teresa Stratus of off-off Broadway." "The Hang" imagines the final hours of the life of Socrates as he asks his friends to use every moment left to think on virtue.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

First things first. Let’s get this out-of-the-way. Tyrone Wells (I) wrote this bio.  I figured, “who better to talk about myself than myself?”.

I’m a lot of things in no particular order… a preacher’s son, a brother, a husband, a dad, a real estate lover, a major-label artist, an independent artist, an opener, a headliner, a very self-conscious dancer (think “Footloose”, only without the cathartic cutting loose), a gardener, a wanna be surfer, a person who has needed therapy, a pickleball player, a barstool theologian, and this next one kind of goes without saying because you’re here reading my bio.. I’m  a singer-songwriter.

I’ve written a lot of songs.  Probably approaching around 1,000 songs now… to me, when I wrote them, they were all good songs.  The luxury of time has informed me, some of the songs were maybe just good to me.  And some of the songs, inexplicably, have millions upon millions of listeners.  Meanwhile, others have tens upon tens.  I don’t know why, I just write them and set them free.

Ultimately, I’m trying my best to be honest, and write a song that I, and you can both love.  I’m gonna keep trying.  I’m so grateful that you have listened. Be it once, or be it a hundred times.  I’ve got big love for you.  I’ll be over here chopping away and reminding myself to be vulnerable. Peace and Love, XOXO Tyrone

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

When The Who’s TOMMY was released in 1969, it was immediately recognized as a rock & roll landmark. A musical-length “rock opera” with story line and themes that resonated with a vast audience: infidelity, child abuse, idol worship, and yes…pinball. Those themes in the context of a rock album with elements of classical composition produced rock radio classics that are now instantly recognizable. TOMMY was also released during a time when the world, like it’s lead character, was undergoing seismic transformation.

In a present day that feels nearly as transformational, the time feels right to again bring TOMMY to the stage. Smash The Mirror: A Portland TOMMY Experience aims to create an authentic performance, incorporating visual and theatrical elements inspired by the 1975 film version. A rock ensemble complimented by horn section and other instruments will accompany local “star” guest singers to portray different characters in the story.

Smash The Mirror features:

    • Ben Landsverk (Wonderly, Low Bar Chorale) - Music Director

    • Rich Ray (Ramble On - Led Zep tribute, Jukebox Heroes - Foreigner tribute) - lead vocalist and co-producer

    • Cory West (LiquidLight, Who’s Next - The Who tribute) - lead/electric guitar/vocals

    • Don Henson (Sneakin’ Out, Groovy Wallpaper, WELL) - keyboards/effects/percussion/vocals

    • Anthony Medici (LiquidLight, Superunknown - Soundgarden tribute) - bassist/vocals

    • Connor Reilly (Mercury Tree, LiquidLight, Rainbow Face) -  drums

    • Dennis Milstead (LiquidLight) - acoustic guitar/vocals

    • Jen Allison (Nowhere Band) - French horn/vocals

    • Ruby Friedman (Ruby Friedman Orchestra, Low Bar Chorale) - guest vocalist

Kanekoa, Ukulele Jam Rock from East Maui.

Sailing in on a wave of blissful sound, Maui’s Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winning band Kanekoa has become a global phenomenon. Powered by electric ukuleles and exotic rhythms, these ukulele masters ride the wave of Hawaiian roots with jam band energy, creating a sound they call Hawaiian jam-rock. For the last 25 years audiences never fail to swoon over their soulful originals and crafty covers interpreted with pure originality. The Grateful Dead’s drummer Bill Kreutzmann goes so far as to call them, “the Hawaiian Grateful Dead.” David Hidalgo of Los Lobos says, “These guys scare me. They are that good.” They recently graced the cover of Ukulele Magazine and were referred to as “Hawaiian Trailblazers”. Once you hear Vince Esquires lead ukulele, you’ll know why he was invited to play with the Allman Brothers Band by his good friend Gregg Allman. The October dates feature a very special guest, master percussionist Lopaka Colon (Pure Heart, Henry Kapono, Mick Fleetwood).

“Kanekoa‘s live shows are legendary throughout the islands and beyond – anyone that has had the privilege of seeing Kanekoa perform can attest to a live experience unlike any other.”
— Kala Brand Music

“I’ve been jamming with Kanekoa for years now and whenever I get over to Maui we share the stage. Hawaiian style roots music at its best.”
—G LOVE

“Wow…They are really tight, and do very interesting arrangements of our songs.”
—John Densmore, The Doors

Alejandra is a personal and intimate work of music where memories reverberate within the flamenco themes that José Almarcha develops. Behind each note there are glimpses into his interior, his personal history, his roots, and his identity. The result is an ideogram through musical sounds that evoke important memories, places, experiences, and people who left an imprint on him, and that are part of the DNA that comprises his identity.

Dedicated to the mother of guitarist, José Almarcha, who hails from La Mancha, Spain. The sudden and unexpected loss of his mother was instrumental in changing the way Mr. Almarcha composes and interprets Flamenco.

Presented by Flamenco Spain Arts and Culture, FECACE, and Espacio Flamenco Portland.

José Almarcha - Musical Director and Flamenco Guitarist
Lucía Ruibal - Choreographer and Flamenco Dancer
María López - Flamenco Singer

Located in the heart of the eclectic Alberta Arts District, the Alberta Rose originally opened as a motion picture house in 1927 and showed films until it closed in 1978. The theatre has 300 fixed seats and radiates the serene feeling of a Spanish-Colonial courtyard. The Alberta Rose is a mid-size, seated listening room where the audience can enjoy excellent lines of sight, outstanding acoustics and where every seat feels close to the stage and the artist.
