Sometimes a single punctuation mark can send chills down your spine--the entire tone of a text from a partner riding on a single dot. On her latest album as MAITA, Maria Maita-Keppeler digs into that crippling oxymoron of modernity, the constant bombardment of communication paired with utter disconnection. Due February 18th via venerable indie label Kill Rock Stars, I Just Want To Be Wild For You grasps passionately for a world that too often seems at a gauzy distance.

“There’s frustration and desperation simmering underneath those moments of disconnect,” Maita-Keppeler explains. And from dreamy opener “Loneliness”, it’s clear that she’s not going to drift into apathy, instead seeking out the ghost-like shadow of loneliness itself. “I missed that rapport that I had with my loneliness, with myself, that intensity that exists when you're alone,” she adds.

Growing up in Oregon splitting time between her mom’s Japanese-speaking home and her father’s English-speaking home, Maita-Keppeler found an expressive avenue out of her shyness through music. “I was getting so much out of songwriters like Elliott Smith, Feist, and Cat Power at a point when I really needed them,” she says. That fiery devotion brought her to perform at open mics in college, to connect with other people through art.

Along with guitarist/producer Matthew Zeltzer, bassist Nevada Sowle, and multi-instrumentalist Cooper Trail, the Portland-based singer-songwriter tapped into that intimate longing, recording I Just Want To Be Wild For You in a recording studio located in the basement of a church. When it came time to record piano, the group set up microphones in the midst of the sanctuary, the sound of the grand piano matched only by the raindrops dotting across the 40-foot ceilings.

After the critical success of MAITA’s Kill Rock Stars debut, Best Wishes, Maita-Keppeler and her bandmates dedicated their time to reinforcing their already heady compositions, adding a deeper echo of the label’s indie rock legacy. From the churning glow of “Pastel Concrete” to the riotous give-and-take of “Honey, Have I Lost It All?”, I Just Want To Be Wild For You frames the complex emotionality of Maita-Keppeler’s lyrics in visceral songs that sink immediately into the heart. By picking apart the smallest moments of confusion, uncertainty, and disconnection, Maita-Keppeler’s songs discover the heights of emotion.

“I write songs by listening and watching, trying to get to the truth of it all,” she says. The catharsis produced in that process comes naturally, and conveys to the listener just as easily as it does to Maita-Keppeler. In those moments of disconnect, of confusion, of isolation, I Just Want To Be Wild For You thunders ahead, forging unexpected connections along the way.

w/ Special Guest Gregory Uhlmann

Hand Habits is the songwriting outlet of guitarist Meg Duffy. Fun House is Duffy’s most ambitious Hand Habits album to date. Produced by Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) and engineered by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), the record was not intended as a reaction to the pandemic, but it was very much the result of taking a difficult, if much-needed, moment of pause. While Fun House shares some of the same hallmarks as previous Hand Habits releases —a kind of outreĢ queer sensibility, a gentle sense of vulnerability — the record is a marked sonic departure from the often muted tones of 2019’s Placeholder and 2017’s Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void). The eleven tracks on Fun House sparkle, moving in unexpected directions and represent the turning of a corner, a means of processing grief, trauma, and recovery while coming to a deeper understanding of one’s own history and what it means to step into your own power.

In addition to their Hand Habits project, Meg has toured as a guitarist with Sylvan Esso, and has recorded on an extensive list of albums including features on War on Drugs, Weyes Blood, William Tyler, Fruit Bats, and many more. In 2020, Meg joined Perfume Genius as a touring guitarist and has already found the release of a collaborative instrumental album, yes/and (Driftless) with Joel Ford.

w/ Fake Fruit

I was sent an unfinished version of Dose Your Dreams so that I might contribute string parts. I couldn’t stop listening to the rough mixes I received. A friend asked me how the record was. I replied, “My God, Fucked Up have made their Screamadelica.”

And psych-rock-groove it is. The drums mixed wide, propensity for drones, for delay pedal, for repetition, groove. The politics and aesthetics of hardcore married to an “open format” approach to genre. Elements of doo-wop, krautrock, groove, digital hardcore.

“None of Your Business Man” opens the album in familiar enough territory, a sax-assisted exit from an office space. But things get psychedelic very quickly. By the time the title track arrives, Mike Haliechuk is whispering, wah pedals are in full effect, and we’re wearing oversized t-shirts and pinwheeling. “Accelerate,” the lyrical centerpiece of the album, storms in like Boredoms on a bullet train and dissolves into a digital nightmare. The album closer, “Joy Stops Time,” finds Fucked Up at their most Düsseldorfian, nearly eight minutes of blissful motorik.

At the center of it all is Damian Abraham’s scream—a man chained, a man tortured, a true protagonist. The effect is one of an epic, every chapter attempting its own narrative devices, its own genre hybridization—and it works, it works so insanely well. The drama unfolds like a miniature world of many parts being explored, a map being illuminated, location by location.

As with David Comes to Life, there is a story here. David—who once came to life—is now indentured to a desk job. David meets the elderly Joyce who closes his eyes, opens his mind, and sends him on a spiritual journey. David embarks on his own metaphysical odyssey. He sees a stage adaptation of his own life. He speaks to an angel in a lightbulb. He sees an infinite series of universes as simulations within simulations.

Meanwhile, Lloyd—Joyce’s lover—was sent, decades ago, by Joyce on the same odyssey, but was lost in the void. Lloyd seeks to be found and reunited with his lover. Where will David end up? Will Joyce and Lloyd be reunited?

Dose Your Dreams—meaning: treat your dreams as you would a dream, allow yourself to be lost within them, allow them to open your heart and your mind, enjoy them as you would a drug. Reach out for my hand and pull me close.

—Owen Pallett

The Cave Singers

Given the rising popularity of meditative, folky indie acts in the early 2000s, forming a twangy, rootsy folk trio was probably the least surprising move Derek Fudesco could have made. The former bassist and founding member of the successful indie rock group Pretty Girls Make Graves picked up an acoustic guitar and formed the Cave Singers following PGMG’s demise in January 2007, teaming up with vocalist Pete Quirk and drummer Marty Lund.

The Cave Singers released two albums on both Matador and Jagjaguwar Records. Following these releases, The Cave Singers began work on their fifth album. Rather than working with a record company, they opted to coordinate the project themselves and financed the recording through a crowdfunding campaign. The campaign raised 116 percent of the group’s goal, and the album, Banshee, was released in February 2016.

As the world starts to re-emerge and awaken, the summer of 2021 proved to be a hot one and Habibi is ready to dance. After being coined by the New Yorker as having “the Colgate white glisten of sixties girl group pop combined with an uncensored edge” for their acclaimed debut album, Habibi broke boundaries by introducing Farsi-sung tunes on their EP 'Cardamom Garden' that “shed rigid definitions of what constitutes American music” (Pitchfork). In 2020, a month before the world drastically changed, 'Anywhere But Here', the group’s prophetic sophomore album was released which led NPR’s Robin Hilton to call them a “noir girl-group.”

This fall, Habibi will release a two-song EP of original compositions, titled ‘Somewhere’ to inaugurate their signing to the legendary label Kill Rock Stars. The EP will move the unique fourpiece’s sound into the escapism of disco club era New York City, an expansion upon their Detroit-bred garage roots. Habibi knows it’s time to cut loose and take you to the dance floor, enlisting producer Mike Stroud from Ratatat and Heba Kadry as mastering engineer. Fans of the Tom Tom Club and ESG will find here plenty to love.

Fenne Lily

At the age of 23, Fenne Lily is a recovering catastrophist. In the world of her music, Fenne’s inveterate vulnerability transforms what-ifs into worse case scenarios, hypotheticals into heartache. This heart-on-sleeve ethos spawned her early songwriting and colored the emotional intensity of her already confessional work. Now, she’s facing this tendency towards
emergency head on.

“Hypochondriac,” the Bristol singer’s debut single on Dead Oceans, reflects on this struggle and her own role in solving it. “It’s the first in a collection of tracks addressing myself as both the cause of and solution to my anxieties.” Somewhere between the guitar-first catharsis of early Big Thief and the urgent honesty of Sharon Van Etten, Fenne finds the track’s footing.

Fenne’s new material represents a graduation of sorts from the relationship-based themes of her breakout On Hold, and from the rooted plaintiveness of her vocal delivery. She wants dynamism. She wants to be heard. “It’s time for me to be loud if I wanna be loud and not feel like I’m gonna piss anyone off,” Fenne offers up. Though, it’s not an abandonment of these traits she’s known for but a deliberate construction upon them. Fenne says these songs are simply “a more grown up way of being all the things I have always been and always will be.”

Illuminati Hotties

After years of uncertainty including label disputes, unpaid royalties and a surprise (and successful) album drop,And she is ready to make some noise. Her new album Let Me Do One More is three years in the making and Tudzin’s most defiant and accomplished record to date. Let Me Do One More will be out on October 1st via Snack Shack Tracks (in partnership with Hopeless Records.)

After the success of her debut album, Kiss Yr Frenemies, and coining the term “tenderpunk,” illuminati hotties were on their way to recording and releasing a highly-anticipated sophomore album. However, things at the label started to fall apart, and illuminati hotties found themselves stuck in a contract with a label who didn’t have the infrastructure to put out the album the band had been crafting for months. “It felt like any momentum came to a screeching halt. It felt painful to pick up a guitar, to write, to record any loose ends that needed to happen to wrap up the album,” Sarah recalls.

The positive response to FREE I.H. brought back the energy and intention that had seeped out after the label fallout, and Sarah dove straight into the new album, Let Me Do One More. According to Sarah, “The songs tell a story of my gremlin-ass running around LA, sneaking into pools at night, messing up and starting over, begging for attention for one second longer, and asking the audience to let me do one more.”

While FREE I.H. felt like an experimental conduit for self-expression at breakneck speed, Let Me Do One More is the fully-realized creative vision of two years of ambition, heartache, uncertainty, redemption, and ultimately triumph. Sarah reflects, “I love these songs and they’re a part of me and I’m proud of them.”

This IS the one you’ve been waiting for.

Mercy is Natalie Bergman's debut, a self-produced solo album recorded in the strangest of times, during a personal period of profound sadness and reinvention. It's startling, and often beautiful -- a rush to the edge of the cliff, with an unflinching look below

Recorded at her brother's home studio in Los Angeles, CA, Bergman has already had a lengthy, successful career as one half of the brother-sister duo Wild Belle, but this is the first time she wrote and played all the material.

This record absolutely pulses with redemptive power; it is replenishing and original, and deeply cathartic. And before we go any further, you should know that this is kind of a gospel record.

Bergman comes to this material naturally. Her first musical loves were church songs, especially the sing-song-y, repetitive hymns. "I've always written songs about Jesus," she says. "I'm not afraid of it; this album is my take on gospel music." Her voice really works the upper registers in a manner occasionally similar to 1930s blues vocalists, or perhaps Badu. But there's nothing retro about the way she multi-tracks her voice and self-harmonizes in sweet, lofty chords.

It should also be said -- Natalie made this record because she absolutely had to.

The music of Mercy began to germinate a few months after she lost her father in a wrong-way, head-on collision. He and her stepmother were killed by a drunk driver. Shortly after, Natalie visited a monastery in the southwestern desert, and there she began to embark on this album.

Loosely, we can draw parallels to the more avant garde Christian expressions which sprung up in the wake of the Jesus movement -- particularly with 1973's otherworldly record of original devotional songs, Fire of God's Love (reissued in 2018 by Wyrd War) by the ethereal-voiced Sister Irene O'Connor. But Bergman is no nun, and her music is far more sensual than O'Connor's.

"The first song I wrote on Mercy was 'Home At Last,'" she says. "It is the best song I have ever written. I sing a lot about home on this record. Believing in that place has been my greatest consolation. I had an urgency and desperation to know that my father was there. His sudden death was a whirling chaos that assaulted my mind. This album provided me with my only hope for coming back to life myself. Gospel music brings hope. It is the good news; it's exemplary. It can bring you truth. It can keep you alive. These songs have kind of written themselves, and they rely on me to sing them."

Natalie Bergman made one of the first great albums of 2021.

LALA LALA

“I want total freedom, total possibility, total acceptance. I want to fall in love with the rock.

”That’s how Lillie West describes the theme of “DIVER,” the song she calls the thesis of Lala Lala’s third record, I Want The Door To Open. The rock in question is a reference to Sisyphus, the mythical figure doomed by the gods to forever push a boulder up from the depths of hell. To West, it is the perfect metaphor for “the labor of living, of figuring out who you are, what’s wrong with you, what’s right with you,” she says. “I think it’s easy to feel like we keep making the same mistakes over and over again, that we never learn, that we’re Sisyphus; but time is actually a spiral that we move up. The key is falling in love with the labor of walking up the mountain.”

Coming off of 2018’s acclaimed The Lamb, an introspective indie rock album recorded live with a three-piece band, West knew she was ready to make something sonically bigger and thematically more outward-looking than anything she’d done before; a record that would be less a straightforward documentation of her own personal struggles and more likea poem or a puzzle box, with sonic and lyrical clues that would allow the listener to, as the title says, open the door to the greater meaning of those struggles.

Della Mae

In the making of their fourth album Headlight, Della Mae has claimed a more daring sense of freedom than they’d ever allowed themselves before. Boldly breaking genre convention, the Grammy Award-nominated band pushed beyond their bluegrass roots and followed their instinct to their most sonically adventurous body of work to date. And in lyrics, Della Mae has fully embraced the album’s potential as a platform for change, delivering a collection of songs at turns fearlessly personal and powerfully resonant.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jason Lytle (Early Show) show at Mississippi Studios on has been rescheduled to 03/25/2022. All tickets sold for previous dates will be honored on 03/25/22.

Jason Lytle

Jason Lytle first wandered into the public consciousness as the principal singer and songwriter for the band Grandaddy. Formed in Modesto, CA in 1992, and eventually consisting of Lytle along with Aaron Burtch, Tim Dryden, Jim Fairchild and Kevin Garcia, the band initially broke through with 1997′s Under the Western Freeway and the NME-praised single “Summer Here Kids.” The band’s sound,” atmospheric electronics meet warped Americana”, crystallized on 2000′s Sophtware Slump, which was met with breathless hype and earned the band “Next Big Thing” status. Tireless rounds of international touring and mountains of fawning press led to 2003′s Sumday, increasing album sales, more touring, more press, TV show appearances, and a slot on the main stage at the Glastonbury festival. The band produced another EP and an album entitled Just Like the Fambly Cat, before disbanding in 2006. Following two solo albums under his own name, Grandaddy reformed for brief live reunion in 2012 before fully returning in 2017 with Last Place, their first album in over a decade, which was embraced by fans and acclaimed by critics. A sold out tour followed

Wilderado

Formed in the California mountains, but originally hailing from Tulsa, OK, Wilderadohave been steadily building a passionate fan base and defining who they are since 2015. When they first came together,Maxim Rainer (lead vocals, guitar), Tyler Wimpee (guitar, vocals) and Justin Kila (drums) spent a summer in Latigo Canyon, a secluded part of Malibu, with longtime Sufjan Stevens collaborator James McAlister, immersing themselves in writing and recording. Those songs went on to form early EP releases with tastemaker indie labels IAMSOUND and National Anthem, which garnered more than 100million streams, but more crucially provided the backbone to years of touring.

Following initial recording sessions at their one-time home and creative space named “The Misty Shrub” (the title of the first EP) in Latigo Canyon (the title of the second EP), the band returned Tulsa to base themselves from their hometown. Since then, they’ve crisscrossed the USA a half dozen times playing with artists as diverse as Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, Mt. Joy, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise, and have performed on the main stage at such festivals as Lollapalooza, Bottlerock and Austin City Limits.

Some time off from the road in 2020 meant that the band were able to focus on completing their debut eponymous LP. Working with producers and friends James McAlister (The National, Sufjan Stevens, Taylor Swift), Chad Copelin (Broncho,LANY) and Angelo Petraglia (Kings of Leon) the record is slated for release on October 15th2021via Bright Antenna.

Maxim explains, “Making new music is the most fun part of being in a band. It gives you a future, it gives you something to look forward to, it gives you something to work on, something that hasn’t already been decided. There’s always a sense of hopefulness in new music. Once you've finished something, then you've done your job which is to give the world something it didn’t have before. That’s a special feeling, something I'm really proud of.”

The new single, “Head Right,” is the first taste of what’s to come and shows the ambition and intent of a band on the up. A moment that shows confidence and a rambunctious slice of rock n’ roll that builds on what Wilderado does best: the confluence of soaring melodies and lush three-part harmonies. The staple Wilderado sound. Something they have spent the past five years refining and perfecting -now is their time.

We Were Promised Jetpacks

Since releasing 2018’s ‘The More I Sleep The Less I Dream’, We Were Promised Jetpacks’ Adam Thompson, Sean Smith and Darren Lackie have embraced change head-on. Amicably parting ways with guitarist Michael Palmer, leaving a notable empty fourth corner in their practice room, it marked a transitory moment in the band’s acclaimed career, and one that would be cemented by events to come.

Entering 2020 as a trio with a handful of songs written and a small tour under their belts, the world around them came to a sudden halt. Yet despite the unquestionable hardship that the lockdown brought with it, for a band looking to rebuild following a dramatic change, it also proved to be a blessing in disguise.

“I guess it ended up being a lot more collaborative between the three of us,” Sean notes of their fifth studio record, ‘Enjoy The View’. Unable to meet in person, the album began to take shape across countless files bouncing back and forth between their respective Edinburgh homes. As well as providing the space to think more broadly about their own roles in the band, isolation also allowed them to approach their collective sound in new ways.

Since forming in Dublin in late 2016, Pillow Queens have seen their initial word of mouth buzz grow with every new release.

From sharing stages with the likes of IDLES , Soak and Pussy Riot, to their own sold out shows, the band have developed a community of loyal and passionate fans.

The winter of 2019 saw the band travel to the wilds of rural Co. Donegal to record their debut album with award winning producer Tommy Mclaughlin (Soak/Hannah Peel).

Released through the bands own label in September 2021 to near universal critical acclaim, IN WAITING surpassed all expectations, with The Irish Times 5-star review calling it “An Emotional Masterpiece”.

The album was duly nominated for Irelands prestigious Choice album of the year award.

The album gained Album of the Day and A list play on BBC 6 Music , and drew praise and support from the likes of NPRs All songs Considered and KEXPs song of the day.

As more people fell hard for the record, 2021 began with the band being invited to make their US Late Night television debut on CBS’s The Late Late Show and continued to be a special one for Pillow Queens as they signed with Sub Pop Publishing.

In May, the band returned to their Dublin city practice space to begin writing their next record, and have recently found a new home for it, signing a worldwide deal with Toronto’s Royal Mountain Records.

To celebrate, the band released a newly recorded version of live favourite RATS on limited edition vinyl, along with an epic, fan filled music video.

The rest of the year will see the band complete their long delayed sold out Irish and UK tour dates.

‘Catchy guitar licks and regional articulation punctuate the Dublin band’s furious, fun and totally distinct punk sound.’ - Dean Van Nguyen, The Guardian

‘Clever lyrics in loud and proud full-on Irish accents.’ - NPR world music

“Resonant and rapturous, the band finds a way to channel their thoughts on the world around them through precision indie rock song writing that builds into swelling, cathartic choruses” - Dusty Henry, KEXP

‘The Dublin four-piece [Pillow Queens] embody the shared DNA between first-wave emo and country, putting their tender approach and keen, hooky song craft in service of empathetic songs…’ - 50 New Artists to watch, The Guardian
