AthFest and Soul City Presents come together to present a special evening of music at the Miller Theater. The inaugural Athfest Sampler, featuring the Producers, Pylon Reenactment Society and the Pauses takes place June 22.

Originally formed as a Beatles cover band named Cartoon, The Producers changed musical directions in the early ‘80s and began performing their own material in nightclubs around the Atlanta area. The response to their music was so good that they were quickly signed to CBS subsidiary Portrait Records by producer Tom Werman, who had worked with Cheap Trick, REO Speedwagon and Mother’s Finest, among others. They released two albums for the Portrait label, The Producers (1981) and You Make the Heat (1982). The Producers became a regional favorite in the Southeastern United States, propelling “What She Does to Me” onto the national Billboard Magazine single charts.

Pylon Reenactment Society (PRS) is fronted by former Pylon singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay, whose inimitable vocal textures and phrasing defined the post-punk era band’s sound for most listeners. After guitarist Randy Bewley passed away in 2009, Pylon formally disbanded. PRS formed in 2014 for what Hay thought would be a one-off project to perform for Art Rocks Athens- a series of events that explored the connection between the art and music scene in Athens between the years 1975-85. Guitarist and producer Jason NeSmith, a friend and former bandmate in the project Supercluster, invited her to perform. He helped put a backing band together from his band Casper & the Cookies which included powerhouse bassist Kay Stanton (who had also been a member of Supercluster) and drummer Gregory Sanders. The audience response was great.

With their sophomore release Unbuilding, The Pauses have hit their sonic geyser, and attentive listeners can marvel at the resulting indierocktronica glints and glitter. Based in Orlando, Florida, the Pauses are multi-instrumentalist Jason Kupfer, vocalist-bassist/keyboardist Tierney Tough, and drummer Nathan Chase. Their debut, A Cautionary Tale, introduced listeners to Kupfer’s studied ear and methodical rock flourishes, Chase’s technical rhythms, and Tough’s attentive musicality and immaculate vocal. Both of their albums were produced and mixed by J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), and his influence can be heard in the heavier guitar propulsion that churns under the allure of the electronic ear candy on the surface. This combination live makes dancing feel like a decision the whole room made at once.
